In March 2021, David Davis stood up in the Commons and dropped some serious whistleblower evidence.
He revealed text messages pulled from SNP Chief Operating Officer Sue Ruddick’s phone (which Police Scotland had).
They showed Peter Murrell, the SNP’s then-CEO and Sturgeon’s husband, actively coordinating with Ruddick and compliance officer Ian McCann to manage and encourage complaints against Alex Salmond.
The messages paint a pretty grim picture: “fishing” for more complainants even after the police investigation was underway, McCann moaning that a batch of five potential complainants “came up empty,” and talk of hoping one woman would get “sickened enough to get back in the game” and be keen to see Salmond “go to jail.”
There were also references to creating more “fronts” for Salmond to fight and pressurising detectives. Ruddick herself sounded worried about it coming out that they’d been fishing.
Davis said it all added up to a concerted effort to damage Salmond and push him out of public life and that the texts gave a strong prima facie case for collusion.
This story barely got the attention it deserved at the time.

Sturgeon blasted “Alex Salmond and his ‘cronies' as being part of 'old boys' club' peddling conspiracy theories…” “The messages suggest that SNP Chief Executive, Peter Murrell, coordinated Ruddick and lan McCann, the SNP's compliance officer, in the handling of specific complainants.”
