The pitch had swing and seam, and suddenly the batters look clueless. For years, we’ve heard how modern batters are miles ahead of bowlers. But the moment there’s something in the surface, that “skill” narrative disappears real quick. Abhishek Sharma, a flat track bully can’t score runs on good cricketing surfaces and we are already hyping him up for no reason. I have never seen him performing on a surface which provides assistance to the bowlers. The World Cup exposed him and it has been continuing Good to see IPL pitches finally offering something to bowlers this season. Makes the game far more balanced and actually interesting.

This is 100% true but we are in a global environment where country after country has managed extremely invasive mechanisms for info "control" (read suppression). The arrests of people for apparently innocent things is an example. Tight controls on info out of Israel. Look at the arrests in the UK last year. The global trend is moving in this direction. So in the general policy making sphere, there must a ubiquitous feeling that they are directionally correct. We have a really serious problem at hand as citizens. Pretty much across the globe. And specifically for us, in India.

India is surviving because its middle class decides to send their kids to colleges where they experience a hostel life. In that hostel life, the dehat is deleted upto a large extent from the minds of these kids. They mingle with different castes & ethnicities, form friendships & romantic relationships, learn to navigate through difficulties of life, learn about different cultures, their food & traditions, deal with breakups & failures. In these hostels, they even attend their sick friends like a family. They taste their freedom with that first cigarette or a beer. They learn to complete assignments on last moment and hold their nerves even when they are not ready for exams. They prepare themselves for jobs & pull out their families from low income traps. Some embark on journeys to study abroad & see the world. These kids in engineering, medical, business etc colleges are the only chance for India to grow big & bring prosperity to most of its populace. The investment made here is not just on education. This is nation-building even when you cannot see it directly. The noise & burden of your birth identity vanishes here and then you hear your inner voice, the voice then grows into a call.
