Not so fun fact: I see the Siege of Leningrad as another Soviet war crime. Yes, SOVIET WAR CRIME. People talk about the city as if it was completely sealed off, but it wasn’t that simple. There were routes out. The tragedy wasn’t only the siege itself, it was also the Soviet state’s choices about who was allowed to leave and who wasn’t. Stalin was paranoid, the same type of paranoid logic we’re seeing again today. Stalin was extremely paranoid, much like Putin, and he wanted to make sure that no former Russian intelligentsia, who mainly lived in Leningrad, still nostalgic for the tsarist era, would survive. Rations were set at levels people could barely survive on, while those close to power lived very differently. Hunger became a tool. And yeah, there was a way out. My granddad drove trucks on the Road of Life over frozen Lake Ladoga. (Latokka, as my family says it, Ladoga as Russians call it.) People could be evacuated on that route and on other roads, but ordinary civilians weren’t simply free to leave. Unless you were useful to the state, or on some mission (KGB, NKVD), you stayed. That “helping people survive” ended up backfiring for my granddad. He had the same last name as mine and was suspected of being a German spy. They sent him to camps up north. He did return, but his health was ruined for the rest of his life. We never met as stomach cancer due to his camp years has killed him less than a year before I was born. He was just 65.

My sister divorced her husband last year. She was 7 months pregnant, on bed rest for high blood pressure, still trying to keep the house together. One night she asked him to bring her a glass of water from the kitchen (literally 10 steps away). He brought himself a beer, drank it in front of the TV, then said "You're just gonna keep asking for stuff all night?" They show you who they are when you're at your most vulnerable. Ladies, please don't marry men who hate you.
