Last week, Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, visited the 126th Infantry Battalion currently serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The Chief of Staff conducted engagements across a number of UNIFIL locations, including UNP 2-45, UNP 6-52 and UNP 2-3, where he received comprehensive briefings on operations and the battalion’s ongoing contribution to peace and stability in Southern Lebanon.
During the visit, medals were presented to members of the 126th Battalion who are currently undertaking their first overseas deployment, marking a significant milestone in their service. Lieutenant General Mulcahy commended their professionalism and dedication while serving abroad on behalf of the Irish State.

On Friday, 22 AUG 25, Cathal Brugha Barracks commemorated the 103rd anniversary of the death of General Michael Collins, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, who was killed in an ambush at Béal na Bláth.
A military ceremony was held in his honour, with participation from units of the Barracks, members of the Collins family, veteran associations, An Garda Síochána, and the ANSAC Credit Union.
Lieutenant Colonel Alan Courtney, Officer Commanding 7 Infantry Battalion and Cathal Brugha Barracks, together with Mr Aengus Collins O’Malley, addressed the parade, reflecting on the enduring legacy General Collins holds for both military personnel and his family today.
We thank all who attended, supported, and commemorated his memory.

7 Inf Bn conducting Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT)
MOUT refers to combat training in urban environments such as towns and cities, where threats can emerge from any direction, above, below, or behind cover. It involves close-quarters combat, building and room clearance, rooftop movement, and operating in populated areas. Through MOUT training, the Irish Defence Forces develop the precision, coordination, and discipline required to operate effectively in built-up environments, both at home and on overseas missions.

The Defence Forces would like to acknowledge and thank the families of our soldiers currently deployed in Lebanon. Today the Chief of Staff reiterated that a deployment overseas is not just the soldier getting on the plane but those we leave at home too. Your strength, patience and support of our troops at this difficult time is much appreciated. Support is available to you through your local Unit Liaison Officers that can be contacted through your local barracks, from information on our websites military.ie/en/public-info…, military.ie/en/public-info…, with additional supports through the Defence Forces Personnel Support Service which can be contacted at pss@defenceforces.ie. Furthermore, our partners INSPIRE have a 24hr available to anyone seeking support.
INSPIRE is a 24-hour external confidential counselling service providing a referral and support service on a wide range of personal and work-related issues. The service is available to serving personnel of the Defence Forces and to their partners or spouses, and to their adult children living at home. To access INSPIRE, please call 1800 409-673. Personnel serving overseas can access the service using 00-353-1-685-6816.
The Defence Forces can reconfirm that all Defence Forces’ personnel are currently safe and accounted for, and they continue to maintain a high level of vigilance and monitor the developing situation in their respective mission areas. They are complying with UN security precautions, including taking shelter in protected positions as and when appropriate. There is no doubt that our troops are operating in a very challenging environment, but there are robust force protection measures in place to support the safety and security of all personnel, and these measures are continually reviewed and enhanced to address any emerging threats. Our people are highly trained, well equipped, professional, and have undergone rigorous preparation to effectively handle the challenges that come with peacekeeping in this volatile region.
