Even a workplace of 50 workers requires at least a year of behind-the-scenes organizing work to build up a network of reliable leaders, test your structures, etc., These steps are all necessary to enter a union representation vote with confidence. If you do win said union vote, the average time between a successful vote to be represented by a union and negotiating a first contract is over 400 days. For context, the annual turnover rate in the service industry is 74%. This means a resistant employer can and usually will hold up a successful union election in the courts long enough for almost an entire workplace to turn over. One grocery store organizer locally told me that the average turnover rate was 3 months at his store. This means the turnover of union leaders, supporters, etc., is constant in the lowest sections of the service economy, making any real attempt to use the legally sanctioned processes feel like a treadmill.” salt801.com/articles/theor…

The construction of mass organizations is of huge importance to communists today. There is a large gulf between our ideas and priorities and the political will and capacity that presently exists among the working class. Mass organizations are the key to bridging this gap.

There is a lot of to say about the pride month discourse; there is not a single materialist argument against queer liberation. Queer people should continue to organize communists should contribute to the trend pulling the LGBTQ+ movement away from careerists and capitalists.
