For years people believed absinthe caused hallucinations because it’s made with wormwood, which contains a compound called thujone. Modern science has shown the amount is far too small to cause psychedelic effects. The real culprit was usually just very strong alcohol. Absinthe wasn’t legal again in the United States until 2007, after nearly a century-long ban.
