@joshtoole91 When you watch the race back he is in a terrible spot at the first bend. Winner had a lovely position and Harry couldn’t really have picked a worse spot to be (not his fault with all the shenanigans at the start and a huge field).

@ciaranodeorain @simonsanders1 Absolutely. He probably improved for a step up to 3m on paper (for ratings purposes), but very few animals are at there peak at 9. Most are at 7. Ratings over 3m plus are always higher. SS is a bit of an exception to that particular rule.

The only time that the winners of the CC & Ryanair both ran in the same season's Melling Also the last time the CC winner ran in the same season's Melling Tbf, Flemenstar & Finian's Rainbow were a fair supporting cast to SS & Cue Card, added bonus of Mad Moose refusing to race

@simonsanders1 @ciaranodeorain Amazing wasn’t it! When you think a 9yo Cue Card still had the beating of a prime Vautour too. SS different gravy !

@ciaranodeorain Treated a quality horse like Cue Card in prime form with utter disdain…. As good as you can get #Sprinter version 1 ❤️👍

@SamCaney @RiskForRewards 100%. Would love to see more kept in training for many a year. I have always loved Al Aasy and Hamish. They’ve been around more than most jumpers now !

@8_barrows @RiskForRewards Absolutely! I think people get too caught up in 2 yo and early 3yo form. A typical flat horse won’t see there peak at least until there 4yo season. Take ombudsman and calandagan…. Weren’t exactly crack 2 yo’s. Could also say took a while to work out what ethical diamond was

@SamCaney @RiskForRewards And Los Angeles just fell off a cliff (or his level was perhaps flattered as a 3yo). You can see through LA/Ombudsman how much Calandagan improved as a 4yo.

@SamCaney @RiskForRewards Moving his level to one side it is crazy what has happened to some of the horses in that collection of form. Al Riffa has become a stayer and Ambiente Friendly a hurdler ! Just shows it can take quite a few seasons to work a horse out.

@SamCaney @RiskForRewards So in that sense it’s really any overused face value comparative that is way more complicated than people make out.

@SamCaney @RiskForRewards Like anything it depends what race you use. Use the Coral E (beating Al Rif 1l) and suddenly Fairy Glen is the best horse in training 😂. Use the Derby beating Ambiente F and he’d have finished mid pack in the Supreme. Clearly the Juddmonte was COTs best. It’s not Calans best run

@The2000Guineas Paddington would the only one I’d bet with the benefit of hindsight as he was a miler. The other good horses were out and out middle distance horses. I don’t think anyone would have even contemplated backing an AR, COT or a Lux in a mile race by the middle of their 3yo season.

@The2000Guineas What horse would have actually been able to win even if fully tuned 🤷‍♂️ (none imo). A mile at 3plus is pretty specialist. Subsequent events proved COT and AR weren’t quick enough (although they ran disgracefully-certainly exaggerated ). LBB wasn’t good enough and was a sprinter.

@proudy27 @ciaranodeorain It’s still hard to believe that Fact to File ( one of the very highest rated horses in training) didn’t run over hurdles at all.

We need to talk about (Irish) bumpers…. Since Annie Power and Don Cossack won the CH & GC in 2016, only Sizing John, Anibale Fly, Marine Nationale, & Brighterdaysahead have started off in an Irish bumper and placed in a Triple Crown race Do we need to rethink bumpers?

@ChrisGartner2 @mackenzieJ91 @ryanOTHx I think that will come now he has consistently put himself in the shop window. He won a few festival G1s a couple of years ago with Protektorat and Grey D. The sourcing is so important I guess. Throwing money at PTPs just isn’t working on the whole for the likes of Elliot and PN

Willie could have the first 20 in the National and he wouldn’t stand a chance. It’s been a long time coming but Dan Skelton is finally Champion Trainer. Another brilliant Saturday & going back to Cheltenham, Madara & Supremely West sum up why he’s streets clear in UK.
ITV Racing@itvracing

Diamond Dealer shows you how to jump! A excellent round of jumping brings up £4 MILLION for trainer @DSkeltonRacing, a record in British racing... is he now, finally, Champion Trainer?

@davidjohnsonTF @MacThePunter If Willie hadn’t turned up (for ground reasons or some such) 6 of his 7 G1s were won by him with the next best finisher from the UK. UK would have won 8G1s to IRE 3. This year it’s a lazy conflation to say we were behind IRE as a collective. It was very much a singular Irishman.

@MacThePunter Do you think Dan would swap the £4m mark for a trainers title and a Champion Hurdle? Thought the stat is noteworthy on 2 scores, to accumulate that much despite training only one Grade 1 wnr and that like the Prestbury Cup score, in terms of G1 talent, UK still behind Ire.

@ChrisGartner2 @mackenzieJ91 @ryanOTHx Google tells me Willie had his first festival winner at 38. Looks like Dan has that burning desire and dedication to build in the next 2-3 decades in my opinion.

@ChrisGartner2 @mackenzieJ91 @ryanOTHx I get what you are saying but it’s worth pointing out the likes of Skelton are rapidly improving and they are still very young. Willie is 69 and Dan is 40. Dan’s rapid ascendancy will slow in pace but he is still only 40. Willie’s Rome wasn’t built in a day either.

@proudy27 @ciaranodeorain It’s early days but I like this junior hurdle concept (and no loss of novice status). That’s genuine experience at 3/4 over timber before a proper go at 4/5. No need for a 2m flat race in that instance and they’d hit open hurdling/chasing nice and young.

@charlie_deluchi Happens every year and demonstrates a difference between betting using your eyes and betting using your ears! The form doesn’t scream he will win, but the trainers mouth has always delivered effusive praise. Il let him win personally. God gave us eyes for a reason after all.

@bulmer152 @simonsanders1 I’ve fallen down this rabbit hole on this app in the last few days so I won’t repeat myself with all the facts. Cross reference the big UK trainers with the big Irish (non Mullins) and you will come to a diff conclusion on that first sentence. Elliott’s festival was incredible!

@8_barrows @simonsanders1 Shows the gulf in class between British trainers and the Irish though. They’ve got the talent to put multiple in races. For me; Henderson would have a better strike rate with a never say die jockey such as one of the Bowens. And that sort of showed last week.

As soon as Nico De Boinville has to go to work, he just gives up. Him and Henderson couldn’t be anymore out of form. 4 bumps on the back of Soomaroy and that was him done.
