To piggy back off Bernie here... when you look down at Memphis you've got Velazquez hitting .048, Ledbetter hitting .080, Baez hitting .207 with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs, Matt Koperniak is the only one producing at .316 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs but NOT on the 40 man #stlcards
Miklasz@b_miklasz

Since Nathan Church had 3 hits on Opening Day, the #STLCards LF position has turned in a .097 average, .176 OBP, .129 slug, no RBIs, 29.4% strikeout rate and a minus 5 wRC+ that's 105 percent below league average offensively.

@b_miklasz I still believe in Nathan Church. He brings so much defensively and on the bases. I think the bat will come.

Yep, you could say the #STLCards have a left-field problem offensively. Through 10 games, the position has generated a .171 average, .200 slug, .437 OPS, no homers, two RBIs, a 26.3% strikeout rate, and a wRC+ that's 69 percent below league average.

@shegone03 Much easier play for the OF. I'm not sure if he slipped or misjudged it. It would have been an incredibly difficult play for Semien to make.

I’m seeing a lot of people blaming Rookie right fielder Carson Benge for not making a diving catch on this play and that’s BS! It’s probably because of the made up Catch Probability nonsense but this was a difficult play for everyone involved. Personally I believe that if Marcus Semien doesn’t stop he makes a running catch and the @Mets go to the 12th inning. If you watch when Semien stops running and the amount of time before the ball lands and where it lands he could have taken 2 or 3 more strides and caught it standing up. What I don’t know is if anyone was calling it. As an infielder going out to the outfield on a play like this it is your ball until the outfielder calls you off. Tough way to lose a game. #shegone

@b_miklasz Great info! Not sure who should bat cleanup. I understand Marmol's explanation of trying Winn. I would like to see Gorman vs RHP and Walker vs LHP.

@rusty_hendricks Stack your best 3 batters at the top. I like it. For me, Winn is a 6-7 hole hitter. But, not too many good options.

@kyler416 Bryan Torres. Versatile defender. Speed. Hits from the left side. Impressive OB%. Would be a nice bench player. Thoughts? Will he get a shot?

I have to tell you, I think this is one of the best podcasts that Brian and I have done. We go over the hot roster topics, Brian dishes on the minor leaguers still in Florida, and we get into what to expect in Memphis
Brian Walton@B_Walton

This week, @kyler416 and I discuss #stlcards Spring Breakout and Springfield exhibition games, roster decisions (26-man and 40-man), Memphis starting and relief pitching, spring standouts from Minor League Camp and tease an upcoming announcement. thecardinalnation.com/wednesday-with…

@STLSprtsCntrl I was looking forward to @b_miklasz reaction. I agree with all that was said. Very confusing move. Velazquez had earned a spot on the roster. I was wanting to see what he could do with the opportunity.

Nelson Velazquez led the #STLCards in basically EVERYTHING this spring… And still got sent down. Bernie Miklasz breaks down why this decision makes zero sense ⬇️ youtu.be/_dQYcuNgaPs

@joshjaco98 Here is how I would have done it for the first 30 games. OF starts for each: Church 20, Velazquez 20, Scott 20, Walker 20, Saggese 10 (+5 from 2B/SS).

@8jwilliams I don’t disagree that they both “deserve it” over Fermin. My point is that if you have Velazquez/Saggese/Church all on the roster, one of those guys isn’t going to play much at all. And for all three, I want to see regular at-bats.

@joshjaco98 I don’t like it. He earned a spot on the roster based on his performance. Church had as well. I would have taken chances releasing Fermin.

I would have had Velazquez personally, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like this. And this may end up being better for the development of Saggese/Church, which I definitely don’t mind. I think Velazquez could be fun so I wanted to see it, but I’m not “all-in” on him either.

Outfielder Nelson Velazquez did not make the #STLCards’ opening day roster and will be assigned to Memphis, Chaim Bloom said (via Jeff Jones) The 27-year-old batted .357 with 4 HRs and a 1.116 OPS in 42 spring ABs Thomas Saggese, Jose Fermin and Nathan Church did make the team

I know it was only spring training, but I like that the Cardinals had a record of 17-9-2. Nathan Church-complete player. JJ Wetherholt-it's time. Nelson Velazquez-LF is yours. Joshua Baez-impressive. Ivan Herrera-please stay healthy.

My final 2026 #STLCards Opening Day roster prediction. Given the roster moves over the last 2 weeks, the lineup is the most important part of his one. The roster is pretty much settled, so the batting order matters quite a bit now. Less than a week until Opening Day!

My third 2026 opening day #STLCards roster prediction (2/3): A bare bones lineup full of youngsters for 2026. The bullpen gets a bit sloppy and busy. My starting pitcher guesses feel 40% wrong. Leahy and Pallante as swingmen helps. Unleash Jose Fermin and Bryan Torres!

@b_miklasz OF thoughts. Church impacts the game; he's a winning player. Velazquez's bat has earned him a spot. VS II is fun to watch. I would take Saggese over Fermin. Walker, don't agree with it. Wish Torres would have been given a longer look...

I'm in the group that's not sure this is the best plan but...it is a rebuild. I keep reminding myself of that. If it costs them games this year it's okay. If he gets better, great. If he doesn't, well, then the team knows how to proceed moving forward.
Derrick Goold@dgoold

Given the playing time and coaching time invested in Jordan Walker, it should be clear by now how high the #Cardinals believe his upside is as a hitter and he needs to be with MLB staff in majors to unlock it. That's their stance. More here: stltoday.com/sports/profess…
