I belive it too to be cataclysmic. It was basically a double punch. First, massive volcanoes made the world super cold, which killed the crops and caused a huge famine. Then, the deadly plague hit and wiped out nearly half the population. By then the land was left basically empty and the system had collapsed, also Slavic people moved south into the Balkans just to survive the freezing cold.

@goy_im_oh I mean I've been reading up on it, seemed to be cataclysmic. Idk how true it is but it is estimated 50-60% of Europe perished from it. Likely this was higher in some countries than others and the Eastern Roman Empire was much more urbanised so probably the majority died from it

Lol..are u really that dumb? Using Bulgarians as an example actually proves you wrong. Bulgarians are a mix of majority Slavic, Turkic, and local tribes, and their DNA clearly shows those migrations. If the 'Sicily theory' were true, 11th-century Albanian DNA would look like Southern Italians. It doesn't. The Nature Human Behaviour study proved that 11th-century samples in Albania are genetically identical to the local Bronze Age Balkan populations from 3,000 years ago.

Malakismeni you’re maliciously misreading the study. It didn't just look at Y-DNA, it used whole genome (autosomal) DNA to prove that modern Albanians derive 80–90% of their ancestry from the indigenous Bronze/Iron Age Balkan populations. The 800–900 CE date isn't when the population 'started' it’s when the study confirms the ancestors had already survived the Great Migrations as a genetic refuge. It proves continuity, not a recent origin.

Ancient Thracian DNA is dominated by E-V13, not the R1a-Z282. Finding rare R1a in the ancient Balkans is evidence of trade or minor steppe contact, not a whole population. Data from DNA studies shows Slavic ancestry in the Balkans jumped from 0% to ~50% between 600–700 CE. That is a massive physical migration, not "cultural sharing." Shared burial mounds (kurgans) date back to 3000 BCE. They are a "family trait" of all Indo-Europeans (including Greeks and Romans), not a specific link between Thracians and Slavs.
