For decades, highways were expanded instead of investing in public transport, walking and cycling. The result was more traffic, more pollution and cities designed around cars.

@A38Expansion Hiking Derby's woodlands convinced me these landscapes need protection. Fund trams and Midland Mainline electrification instead of felling ancient oaks for induced traffic.

@A38Expansion @OurSacredGrove Travelled that section of the A47 today. It’s unrecognisable, like the area’s been nuked. Judging from the number of roundabouts I can only assume that housing developments will come later. Norfolk is no longer the pleasant, rural county I was born in.

🚨 Is this the future for the A38? Aerial images of the A47 works in Norfolk show the scale of destruction: trees and habitats lost, rising emissions, and years of disruption for residents.

The inclusion of the £650m A38 Derby Junctions and £2.2bn A66 Northern Trans-Pennine schemes in RIS3 was the biggest disappointment, as they offer such poor value for money. Neither scheme has an approved full business case, and could still be scrapped. @A38Expansion

If every council in the U.K had introduced the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, School Streets, cycle lanes, and 24-hour bus lanes I delivered in 2020 when Cabinet Member for Transport in Hackney, we wouldn’t need to worry about yet another ‘petrol crisis’…👇
