Launch Slack and you take 10 steps back from your computer. Look at the silhouette of the app. You will question whether it was made for humans or not.

I appreciate the hype around "AI replacing engineers", because: - it's a testament of our progress - it affords more time for the tech enthusiasts to focus on harder problems - and it repels alllll the people here for the money

The longer you spend in tech, the stronger the urge to buy a farm and never touch a computer again in your life.

I've found most doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, dentists to be lousy. Always 15min late to take you in, and yet constantly watching the clock. This is one counter to the idea of AI & robotics making the world worse. I used to favor humans for these sorts of engagements, but I may prefer robots for certain procedures. Only time will tell.

many times, it's ornament. every once in a while, I do find that sophistication serves some purpose that the author/creator/builder intended.

A positive side-effect of trying lots of things is that you learn why design guidelines exist. Then, you inevitably ask why different things in the world break certain rules, and if you go deep enough, you find that it’s likely differentiation or optimizing for an unpopular ideal.

One clear side effect of consuming external thoughts, sounds, and being around certain tribes is that you start to want what they want. You start signing up for things that are quite unnecessary.

Once you realize how music impacts your mental state, thinking, and mood, you become very cautious what you listen to. Same with tv, food, what tribes you associate with and listen to. "You are what you consume" is not obvious in the moment, but in hindsight, it's so glaringly true.
