>shopify runs $292B a year in commerce on ruby >by 2020, ruby was too slow at their scale >so they hired one engineer, Maxime Chevalier-Boisvert, a PhD in compilers out of montreal >the brief was one sentence: make ruby itself faster >she and a small team built YJIT, a JIT compiler that lives inside official ruby. >every rails app that flips it on runs 30-40% faster. >every commit she ships goes into the public ruby release. >not "shopify ruby." just ruby. >the same one the rest of the internet runs on. >so the engineer shopify pays to speed up their checkout also sped up the github clone you built last weekend. why give it away? - the compiler gets better the more people run it. - every rails app in production stress-tests her code, so the bugs find themselves. - lock up the fixes and you break the flywheel you depend on. you don't win the long game by hoarding the foundation. you fund it and hand it back.

OpenAI shipped /goal not too long ago. I feel like GPT-5.6-sol is the first model that just doesn't need it anymore? It just keeps on going until the thing is done. Really impressive.

Canada needs to be thankful that we have the @nationalpost. I don’t know how they managed to avoid becoming a propaganda rag like all other legacy media, but it can’t have been easy.

products of 2015 were largely build by senior programmers in the 2010s who joined the industry in the early 2000s and spent the 90s as teens honing their craft while everyone was telling them they won't amount to anything. Of cause they made fantastic things, no one was writing code because it was trendy, they all showed up because they could not stay away. Eternal September 2

@tobi @__vandos__ Completely disagree with the premise. All non ai coded product before 2015 were better than most ai products today! Are you an exemption, cause the market is filled with subpar denigrate products .

A huge amount of the Anti-AI code sentiment massively overestimates the quality of human code outside of a very small set of open source and high quality company codebases. Human Slop is everywhere and can trivially be improved on by any opus level model.

@tobi @dhh What social capital comes from emulating this? Who are we trying to impress? Does their opinion matter?

The most retarded argument for Europe's net-zero mission — including the war on air conditioning — is that it'll "inspire others to follow". What country will look at what Britain or Germany did to their economies in the name of net zero and say I WANT THAT!?!

@__vandos__ None of this is true since opus level models are around. It’s just that people wish it was true as copium. And in the fable case the reverse is actually true: it finds logic errors everywhere.

@tobi The real problem isn't syntax — it's logic. AI‑generated code has 75% more logical errors that look correct but fail at edge cases. Security issues are 1.5–2x more frequent, including hardcoded secrets and broken authorization checks. The quality gap isn't in your favor.

HOLY CR*P 🚨 Democrats laundered SO MUCH MONEY before Donald Trump took office In the 76 day period between Trump winning and Biden leaving office $93 billion was sent from the DOE, who GAVE IT AWAY WITH NO OVERSIGHT, TO ENTITIES WITH NO FINANCIALS “The 76-day period you're talking about, that's the period between the time that President Trump was elected and President Biden left office — How much taxpayer money went out the door of the Department of Energy? From the Loan Program Office in Loans and Commitments $93 billion. Well over twice as much as in the previous 15 years” — You’re you're telling me that the Department of Energy in the 76-day period before their boss was gonna leave office gave our own money to entities that had no business plan? “Correct.” “No financials?” “Correct.”

Last week there was a fire 1/4 mile from one of Setting Norths fly in fishing camps. It was on the lake, didn’t end up burning camp down but it’s still active. A helicopter flew in to lay down sprinkler system to protect camp.
