As much as I disagree with the reason behind the decision, there is merit to being restrictive in your design choices. It leads to both more dev and player creativity, since limitations tend to have that effect. Now, what would a good compromise here would be the development of multiple utilities such as decoys or repellents to help navigate the world that way, and since you’re underwater you can really lean into the theme and go off of sonar devices and the like so the player has to check everywhere on the HUD to be aware. If you’re gonna slap a restriction down, different solutions to address the problem should be explored rather than just going “nah we took away one option and didn’t add anything.”

The developers of Subnautica 2 want to keep the game non-violent like the first one. They want players to adapt and live with the ocean creatures instead of fighting or killing them with weapons. This core idea started years ago when studio founder Charlie Cleveland chose to leave guns out of the series after the Sandy Hook shooting. He wanted the game to feel like peaceful exploration of nature rather than adding more violence to the world. Even though fans from one country overwhelmingly asked for the chance to craft weapons in the sequel the team says this will be a repeated point of resistance. One developer explained "I think it's a point of resistance that we'll get repeatedly while making the game though we feel strongly about it." So players must instead use smart tools evasion and distraction to survive.

@ZT2Cans I understand the devs not wanting us to kill fish but we need SOME way to make them screw off. The Sonic Resonator doesn't even work on all fish. Let me bash them over the head with my Survival Multitool

so far my only gripes with subnautica 2 are: - even the TADPOLE can't kill fish??? what dat mean - NO ALIEN CONTAINMENT (yet, I assume) - no yeah we really need to be able to fight back, even if we can't kill stuff, just let us damage them and have some visual effect

@ABCD124222 it’s mostly used for despawning portals but I didn’t see the harm in despawning clones, maybe for a really niche scenario or something idk

Essence Returnal: Valem has the choice to either despawn his clones or portals, if he despawns a “matured” portal he’ll get more progress on his boredom bar
