If you were the CEO of Europe, what would you do? That was the question put to ACEA President and CEO of @MercedesBenz , @OlaKaellenius , and ACEA Commercial Vehicle Board Chair and CEO of @DaimlerTruck , Karin Rådström, during the fireside chat at the 2026 ACEA Annual Reception. The conversation explored Europe’s competitiveness, the challenges facing the automotive sector, and the role our industry plays in shaping the future of mobility. We are calling on the @EU_Commission to move forward with provisional application of the EU-Mercosur agreement, without delay, as soon as individual #Mercosur countries finalise ratification. In a context of intensifying global competition and mounting supply chain pressures, this agreement is a strategic necessity. Strengthening of our industry’s #competitiveness, securing key export markets, and reinforcing Europe’s resilience during the green transition are a must for automotive manufacturers. Every year, more than 30% of vehicles produced in the EU are exported worldwide, generating a €100 billion trade surplus for Europe. The Mercosur agreement would add to this by eliminating tariffs of up to 35% on EU-made vehicles, increasing access to a market of around 3 million vehicles that is expected to grow. Europe cannot afford to hesitate. Swift implementation is essential to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in an increasingly challenging global environment.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 📊 🚛 European truck, bus and van registration figures for the whole of 2025 are fresh off the press! 🚚 EU #van registrations fell by 9%. Diesel remained the top choice, with an 81% market share. Electrically chargeable vans captured 11% of the market share 🚛 #Truck registrations dropped by 6%. The successful conclusion of these negotiations is a landmark moment for global trade. It opens meaningful opportunities for European manufactuers to access a market of around 4 million passenger cars that has long been shielded by import tariffs as high as 110%.  However, the agreement does come with important restrictions such as quota limitations and residual tariffs that will limit the potential benefit to some extent. We look forward to reviewing the detailed terms of the deal will begin once the texts are published in the coming weeks. 🇪🇺🤝🇮🇳 EU–India FTA: let’s get it right. We support the concluding EU-India #FTA negotiations but the final deal needs to provide deep and meaningful access to automotive markets. Right now, the deal risks being buried under quotas, residual tariffs, licensing hurdles and market segmentation. The parties need to cut the restrictions and be ambitious in granting meaningful quotas – particularly with long-term market size in mind – and in completely removing tariffs. It’s not just about exports. Scrapping tariffs on auto parts would be a big win for industry in both #India and #Europe. We warmly welcome the vote in the European Council today in favour of signing the trade agreement between the EU and #Mercosur. The expression of support by member states for this deal is a landmark moment and a clear signal that Europe wants to maintain a strong, open and trade-focused economy. The agreement will significantly: 1️⃣ Reduce the tariffs on EU-made passenger cars (currently up to 35%) 2️⃣ Address technical barriers to trade 3️⃣ Strengthen supply chains for critical raw materials We urge policymakers in the European Parliament to swiftly ratify the agreement in order for all sectors involved to benefit quickly from the commercial and strategic benefits of the agreement. 📢 Joint statement on the new steel safeguards Last October, the @EU_Commission proposed continued protection for EU #steel industries, including reduced quotas and higher tariffs. Ten industry groups have issued a joint statement warning of serious downstream impacts and a blow to Europe's industrial competitiveness. As Jonathan O’Riordan, Director for International Trade at ACEA puts it: “It’s not so much the effect of the protective measures on imports; that is not our main concern. 𝐖𝐡𝐲? 🤔 The issue isn't technology - it’s the lack of enabling conditions and demand. Manufacturers face binding #CO2 standards requiring 45% emission cuts by 2030, but transport operators and shippers have weaker, fragmented incentives. 𝐒𝐨, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝? 👨‍🔧 👩‍🔧 The strategic use of public procurement, through direct purchasing and procurement-linked requirements in publicly funded projects, can play a key role in creating demand for zero-emission transport services.
