Dear Mrs Zuma,
Let us deal with facts, history, and political method - not slogans.
The phrase “America First” sounds persuasive only if it is never interrogated. The moment you examine policy and outcomes, it collapses.
Under Donald Trump, the defining economic intervention was the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, signed on 22 December 2017. It permanently reduced the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, while worker relief was temporary and time-bound.
That is not a technical adjustment. It is a structural decision about which class the state serves. Capital secured permanent gains. Workers received temporary concessions.
The outcomes are not theoretical; they are measurable.
In 2018 alone, US corporations spent $806 billion on share buybacks. That money did not go into new factories, expanding employment, or raising wages. It inflated share prices and rewarded shareholders.
At the same time, the commanding heights of US capitalism have been shedding labour at a large scale. Amazon cut over 27,000 jobs. Meta Platforms cut over 20,000. Google cut around 12,000. Industrial firms like Ford Motor Company and General Motors continue restructuring through layoffs.
This is not an anomaly. It is how the system operates.
Who actually gained from the America First myth: Trump-era and aligned oligarchic friends
* Jeff Bezos
$72bn (2017) → $177bn (2021)
* Elon Musk
$13–20bn (2017) → $150bn+ (2021 range)
* Mark Zuckerberg
$56bn (2017) → $97bn (2021)
* Stephen Schwarzman
Close Trump ally; major gains through favourable tax and financial conditions
* Carl Icahn
The adviser benefited from deregulation and market shifts
* Peter Thiel
Early backer; major gains through tech expansion
This is not a coincidence. It is policy-driven accumulation.
So the contradiction is stark, Mrs Zuma:
workers face layoffs and insecurity, while their bosses accumulate at a historic scale.
If “America First” were worker-centred, we would see rising wages, secure employment, and stronger protections. Instead, we see restructuring, which translates into job cuts, and worker resistance - including the 2023 strike by the United Auto Workers.
That is the material reality. So please don't repeat the slogan'Americans First' unless you will show that it was ordinary people who benefited from it.
The assertion that African unity emerged after the defeat of apartheid in 1994 is not just incorrect; it ignores decades of documented political thought and struggle.
African unity was articulated, theorised, and fought for long before South Africa’s transition.
Here are a few examples:
Robert Sobukwe
April 1959 — PAC Inaugural Address
“We aim… at government of the Africans by the Africans for the Africans… with everybody who owes his only loyalty to Africa… being regarded as an African.”
Patrice Lumumba of the DRC
30 June 1960: Independence Speech
“Africa will write its own history… it will be a history of glory and dignity.”
Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana
24 May 1963: Founding of the OAU
“The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
1963 — Africa Must Unite
“We must unite now or perish.”
Julius Nyerere of Tanzania
Early 1960s
“Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa to be disregarded and humiliated.”
Amílcar Cabral - Guiné-Bissau
1969
“Tell no lies… expose lies whenever they are told.”
Steve Biko - A South African
1971
“The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
Thomas Sankara from Burkina Faso
4 October 1984 — United Nations
“Our enemies are those who exploit us, not those who share our poverty.”
The historical record is clear
By:
* 1959 - Sobukwe had defined African unity politically
* 1960 - Lumumba asserted African destiny
* 1963 - Nkrumah institutionalised continental unity
This is a continuous tradition of thought and struggle spanning decades before 1994.

Protesters in Voslorus demanded minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni to speak in isiZulu, she told them she can't speak Zulu, they then disrupted her. This is exactly the reason why South Africans were attacked and killed in 2008 xenophobic attacks! cc: @Julius_S_Malema @Sinawo_Thambo
