Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered. Your photo should be recent (taken in the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you!). Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application. Learn more about passport photo requirements at travel.state.gov/photo

“I didn’t know what was in my bag.” isn’t a defense. Many recent drug arrests in #Japan involve travelers recruited via social media or casual contacts—people asked to carry items they believed were electronics, money, or documents. Never carry items for others. #Japan has strict #DrugLaws — serious penalties, including long prison sentences. Know before you go. Protect yourself.

Our consular sections around the world have seen many Americans run into problems accessing money abroad due to relying on apps. Some common cash transfer apps in the United States do NOT work abroad. If you are traveling outside of the United States make sure you have access to a credit or debit card that works internationally (and have a back-up plan!).

The WORST time to realize you need to renew your passport is at the airport. Make a habit of checking your passport’s expiration date when you start researching destinations, NOT when you're packing your bags. Remember: many countries require 6 months of validity remaining and kids’ passports (under age 16) are only valid for five years, which can fly by faster than you think!

Thinking about bringing CBD to Japan? Read this first. ✅Some CBD products are legal in Japan, but laws are very strict. ❌ CBD must contain zero THC – not even trace amounts. Many CBD products sold abroad, even from reputable brands, do not meet Japan’s zero‑THC standard. Because of this, the safest option is NOT to bring CBD into Japan. 🚫In Japan, any form of marijuana or THC is illegal, even for medical use, including: • Cannabis / marijuana • THC vapes and edibles • CBD oil or other products with any THC When in doubt, leave it at home and review the latest official guidance before you travel: jp.usembassy.gov/services/impor…

Reminder: To use Online Passport Renewal, you must be located in a U.S. state or territory at the time you renew. As soon as you submit your online application, your existing passport will be automatically canceled in our systems, making it invalid for travel even if it hasn’t expired. If you’re a U.S. citizen living abroad, renew your passport at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Japan does not require six months of passport validity for entry. However, if you are transiting through or visiting other countries, a six-month validity may be required. Visit travel.state.gov/destination to review entry requirements for your destination.
TravelGov@TravelGov

Don't let an almost-expired passport ruin your travel plans! Q: My U.S. passport expires in 4 months. Can I still travel? A: It depends! Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, so it depends on where you’re traveling. Look up the entry requirements for your destination at travel.state.gov/destination. If you do need to renew, you might be eligible to do so online. See if you meet the requirements at travel.state.gov/renewonline.
