Our consular sections around the world have seen many Americans run into problems accessing money abroad due to relying on apps. Some common cash transfer apps in the United States do NOT work abroad. If you are traveling outside of the United States make sure you have access to a credit or debit card that works internationally (and have a back-up plan!).

We urge U.S. citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial flight options remain available. Iran: As of April 21, Iran’s airspace has partially reopened. U.S. citizens should leave Iran now, monitor local media for updates, and consult with commercial carriers for additional information on flights out of Iran. Americans seeking to depart Iran may also depart by land to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan. U.S. citizens should not travel to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Pakistan-Iran border area. Be aware that the Iranian government may prevent U.S. citizens from departing or charge an “exit fee” for departures from Iran. U.S.-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran on Iranian passports. The WORST time to realize you need to renew your passport is at the airport. Make a habit of checking your passport’s expiration date when you start researching destinations, NOT when you're packing your bags. Remember: many countries require 6 months of validity remaining and kids’ passports (under age 16) are only valid for five years, which can fly by faster than you think!

Japan: A magnitude 7.4 quake occurred off the east coast of Iwate Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for Japan’s Pacific coast regions of Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, and parts of Hokkaido Prefecture. Tsunami alerts have been issued for other regions in Northern Japan, including Fukushima Prefecture and Eastern Hokkaido. Stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways, including refraining from activities like swimming, surfing, fishing, and boating. Follow instructions from local officials, which may include closing beaches, evacuating low ground areas, harbors and marinas, or moving ships to deeper water if safe to do so. If you are in the affected areas, move to higher ground and keep away from coasts and river mouths which could overflow. Continue to follow any evacuation orders by local government until all advisories are lifted. More at jp.usembassy.gov/tsunami-alert-…

Iraq: Iraqi terrorist militias aligned with Iran continue to plot additional attacks against U.S. citizens and targets associated with the United States throughout Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. Some elements associated with the Iraqi government continue to actively provide political, financial, and operational cover for these terrorist militias. Iraqi airspace has reopened and limited commercial flights have resumed. U.S. citizens considering air travel in Iraq should be aware of the ongoing risk of missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace. U.S. Mission Iraq remains open while on ordered departure to assist U.S. citizens in Iraq. Do not attempt to come to the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil in light of significant security risks. If you are a U.S. citizen and need assistance, contact U.S. Embassy Baghdad at BaghdadACS@state.gov, or Consulate General Erbil at ErbilACS@state.gov. Read more: iq.usembassy.gov/security-alert…
