"One hundred and ninety-three million acres of your national forests. An area larger than Texas. The largest public land agency in the country. Just handed, on a silver platter, to the people who’ve spent their entire careers trying to destroy it. And they did it with a press release on a Tuesday." hatchmag.com/articles/trump…

Sows are kept in gestation crates where they’re artificially inseminated, then moved into farrowing crates to nurse their babies. 🐖 For both stages they’re given barely more space than their own bodies. Unable to turn around, unable to comfort their piglets, unable to move freely. 😣 This is outrageous 💔 #pigs #pigfarming #animalrights

I’m devastated. A good friend and dormmate of mine, Amin Pourfarhang, has been sentenced to death after protesting in Iran 😭 He’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. Please share. Visibility raises the cost for the Islamic Republic and may stop this execution!

I turn 39 today. In my lifetime, the world's relationship with animals has changed in two contradictory ways. 1. We have become more compassionate: - In 1986, no US state treated animal cruelty as a felony. Today all 50 do. - Back then only 20-40 countries had any animal welfare laws. Today 150-180 do. - Animal circuses, fur, and veal were normal and in high demand. Today they're stigmatized and in decline. 2. We have become crueler: - In 1986, we raised and killed ~25B land animals/year. Today, we raise and kill ~85B/year (and ~130B more farmed fish). - In 1986, a large share of those animals were still raised outdoors in decent conditions. Today, almost all are raised in hellish factory farms. I like the positive take on human progress that "The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better." If you care about animals, the second claim is sadly not true. But the third claim still is. And I'd add a fourth: "We can make the world much better." On my birthday, I feel deep gratitude for everyone working to make the world much better for animals. Thanks to you, we've made more progress for animals in the last decade than in all prior decades combined. We're still far from peak cruelty. And I don't know when we'll get there -- why the chart lacks any years on the x axis :). But, thanks to you, I believe we will.

Republicans’ One Big Ugly Bill will be an unmitigated disaster for our economy and our country. This bill will result in the closure of hospitals and clinics, kick millions of Americans off their health care and slash food assistance, all in order to give a massive tax cut to wealthy people and corporations, while borrowing even more money from our kids to do it.      No matter what Republicans say, let’s talk about what’s really in this bill:      It will gut food assistance — a lifeline for seniors, working families, pregnant women, and children, who will go hungry.    It will slash Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and lead to hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare funding, kicking millions of Californians off of their health care when they can least afford it.    It will shutter labor and delivery units and put hospitals at risk of closure around the country, especially in rural and underserved communities, leaving families with nowhere to seek care.       It will decimate clean energy projects, cause hundreds of thousands of job losses, lead to higher energy bills every year, and put us behind China.      It will skyrocket the national debt and deficit, leaving it for our children and grandchildren to pay — hypocrisy of the rankest order.      Americans and Californians are hurting. Prices continue to go up. Housing continues to be unaffordable. And this bill will make things worse — much worse.       What Californians need right now is a government that is working for them – not fighting against them.       We should be focused on bringing down costs, expanding health care for millions, creating economic opportunities, and safeguarding Americans’ hard-earned ability to retire with dignity.       This bill does just the opposite and will cause pain and hardship for millions of families. And that’s why I’ll be voting no.

“He’s a U.S. citizen!” and now he’s missing. 20-year-old Adrian Andrew Martinez’s family says he was trying to stand up for someone being harassed by ICE agents in a Pico Rivera parkinglot. The footage shows at least six agents swarming him. He struggles, but doesn’t lay hands on them. He’s forced to the ground and shoved into a CBP vehicle. His mom can’t find him. No records. No attorney. This is an abuse of authority. Keep recording. Don’t stop. (1 of 2)

What threat did the apartment building behind this Ukrainian boy pose to russia? We — the so-called Free World — have had the power to stop this for 11 years. And we’ve chosen not to. This is madness. At its limit, our complacency becomes complicity. #ArmUkraineToWin

3/4. If we accept the idea that moving a person from one place to another undoes rights and disempowers the judiciary, we are endorsing the basic Nazism practice that enabled the killing of millions.

Journalists need to stop accepting this false frame from Trump that he is trying to negotiate a peace deal between Ukraine and Putin. He is not. He is throwing the Ukrainians under the bus and embracing Putin. That is NOT mediation.

1/ An interesting analysis by ChatGPT on the psychological aspects of the meeting between Zelensky and Trump-Vance is circulating online. It reveals a masterclass in gaslighting, manipulation, and coercion from Trump and his entourage. Let’s break it down. 1/n

USA is losing allies quick, the economy is about to tank when the tariffs hit and people point to us like we're the bad guys for pointing out the obvious: Trump has sold the USA down the river, he's a traitor, and what he's doing all but confirms he works for the KGB as Krasnov.

Wrong, Elon. Social Security has paid every benefit owed to every eligible American for 86 years. We can make it solvent for the next 75 years and expand benefits by scrapping the cap that allows billionaires like you to pay the same amount into Social Security as a truck driver.

Something is shifting. They are still breaking things and stealing things. And they will keep trying to break and to steal. But the propaganda magic around the oligarchical coup is fading. Nervous Musk, Trump, Vance have all been outclassed in public arguments these last few days. Government failure, stock market crash, and dictatorial alliances are not popular. People are starting to realize that there is no truth here beyond the desire for personal wealth and power.
