I was flattered and honored to be invited, two years ago, to deliver the 2027 Lawrence Stone Lectures at Princeton University; I was saddened and mystified to learn that Princeton has disinvited me. #princeton

Maria Popova is right. Just one more point: Trump is doing exactly what Moscow and Beijing want him to do. You’re not cleverly realigning geopolitics when you just follow the lead of the powers that are united against you. They thought this through a long time ago.

This CANNOT work. 1) the US can't give Ukraine to Ru; should be clear by now US would have to literally invade Ukr to help Ru. 2) if the US helped Ru in Ukr, Ru wouldn't become an ally; it'd simply ask for more of Europe and continue seeing the US as an enemy to be brought down.

The friend of my enemy is my friend. Trump doctrine (a propos Russia and Iran).

NEW: Russia continues to expand its intelligence sharing and military cooperation with Iran to facilitate Iranian strikes on US and Israeli forces in the Middle East. Other Key Takeaways ⬇️ Russian General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov continues to aggrandize tactical details and exaggerate Russian battlefield gains to create the false impression that the front lines across Ukraine are on the verge of collapse. Ukraine’s frontlines, in fact, are operationally stable, and Ukraine liberated more territory than Russian forces seized in the theater in February 2026. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu acknowledged the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign against the Russian defense industrial base (DIB), including deep into Russian territory. Telegram founder Pavel Durov has not commented on the widely discussed possibility that Russian authorities may ban Telegram outright. Ukraine is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) integration and deepening defense cooperation with the UK to enhance battlefield effectiveness and long-term technological advantages. Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Oleksandrivka and in western Zaporizhia Oblast. Russian forces recently advanced near Hulyaipole. Ukrainian forces likely struck Russian defense industrial infrastructure. Russian forces launched 178 drones against Ukraine, including Odesa, Chernihiv, Zaporizhia, and Kharkiv oblasts.

Phillips is completely right here. It is absurd to repeat an obviously false framing. And it is harmful, because once stated in the NYT it becomes credible.
Phillips P. OBrien@PhillipsPOBrien

Very disappointed by the @nytimes framing here. Two allies of the Russian economy had their sanctions lifted, using the pretense of the oil price. Lifting sanctions on these two individuals will not make any difference to world oil prices. Its ludicrous and a gift to Putin

He took the greatest military force in world history, lost a war to a middle power in a week, begged the world to save him, and demanded that the media lie about this and everything else. I try, but at a simple human level I do not see how anyone can mistake this man’s almost supernatural weakness for strength. His weakness is something negative, gravitational, so deep that it can draw in a whole country. But only if we fail to see it. Only if we let it.

In Europe Ukraine is holding back Russia and thereby fulfilling the entire traditional mission of NATO without any soldiers or sailors from other countries. Trump is meanwhile demanding that NATO allies leave the continent they are supposed to be defending to join him in a doomed adventure he chose in the Middle East.

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldn’t be in power — not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.
