In the wake of the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, ADC’s Southern California Organizer Doris Bittar and ADC San Diego Education Chair Nadia Swanson spoke with @abc10news about the deeper crisis of normalizing ignorance, misinformation, and anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate. Launched 3 years ago, ADC and our partners have worked to confront this reality through Taalim, an initiative focused on bringing Arab and Muslim cultural education into classrooms across San Diego and Southern California. Too many students grow up without ever meaningfully learning about Arab history, culture, or communities except through the lens of war and stereotypes. That absence creates an environment where unchecked prejudice can grow into discrimination, hate, and violence against Arab and Muslim students. ADC’s education work is rooted in long-term investment in education and cultural understanding through educator trainings, curriculum advocacy, cultural programming, and community engagement. This work does not happen overnight, but moments like this remind us why it is necessary.

This is the new map of Gaza. Nearly 2 million people — most of them displaced — are now crammed into just 133 square kilometers. That is nearly 15,000 people per km².

More than a dozen credible polls and post-election reporting made clear that Gaza, Palestine, Israel policy, and U.S. complicity in the genocide in Gaza impacted voter turnout, enthusiasm, and support in 2024. Yet the DNC’s 192-page autopsy contains zero mentions of Gaza, Palestine, Israel, or genocide. This is a deliberate omission. The report also fails to answer basic questions about the hundreds of millions spent during the campaign: Where did the money go? Who were the top consultants and vendors? Who was responsible for the strategy that failed? An autopsy that erases Gaza and ignores the money trail is not credible.

ADC mourns the three lives senselessly taken in the deadly attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, what appears to be a horrific act of anti-Muslim violence. For decades, Arab and Muslim communities in the United States have faced hate, harassment, surveillance, scapegoating, and political demonization. These policies and rhetoric are even more dangerous when they are adopted by government officials such as Florida Congressman Randy Fine or media personalities like Bill Maher. When powerful political and media figures embrace dehumanization of certain groups, it paves the way for harassment, intimidation, and the type of violence we have seen today. Nothing can bring back the lives stolen today. But we must be clear about the climate that makes violence like this possible, and we must confront it directly. We call on public officials, law enforcement, and community leaders to protect Arab and Muslim communities, condemn hate without hesitation, and reject the politics of fear and division that put scapegoated communities in danger.
