QUESTION: why did our oil earnings fall despite rising crude prices?   I made this case months ago when the war first broke out. So let’s break it down…. -Production Sharing Contract inflows collapsed due to lower production and other structural problems. Roughly 65% decline from February to March 2026; pretty much since the beginning of the war. PSCs are deals where oil companies do the work and the govt takes the profit. The companies spend the money, drill the oil, recover costs first and whatever is left is shared with the govt. - Same old NNPC shenanigans: Thesame ‘ol cycles of delayed remittance or remittances mysteriously disappearing and obscure crude lifting arrangements affecting actual cash inflows to the federation account.  - Forward sale and swap obligations: Forward crude sales and swap deals continue to be a major problem.  What are these? For forward sales; our govt borrows money today and promises to repay with future crude oil. So the govt collects cash upfront, but when the oil is eventually produced, the money doesn’t enter the federation account, it goes to the creditor instead. For swap deals; our govt exchanges crude oil for something else; usually imported petrol.  For instance; you give someone 10 bags of rice, instead of them paying you money, they give you 50 coolers of cooked Jollof rice in return. Nigeria gives traders crude oil, traders import petrol, diesel, or kerosene in exchange. No cash enters govt accounts. Oh and this is also how you hide the actual total amount on fuel subsidy; the subsidy is paid in crude, not in cash. So, in summary; our oil earnings fell by ₦78.7bn despite prices surging simply because we had fewer barrels, poorer remittances, and old crude‑swap debts eating the revenue before it reached govt coffers.
