What happened yesterday didn’t happen in a vacuum. West Bloomfield now can be added to the long list of Jewish communities who have experienced the terror and trauma of a synagogue attack. They felt it firsthand. The rest of us are reeling, too. As I shared with @wolfblitzer on @CNN, Jewish people too often are accused of conspiracies or scapegoated for the world's problems. This isn’t new. It’s been happening for centuries. But I'm sick of the hypocrisy we're hearing from politicians to podcasters, candidates and commentators. You don’t get to say you abhor antisemitism and then blame the Jewish people or the Jewish state for the conflict in the Middle East. It’s gaslighting and we're tired of it. Sick and tired of it.

The Holocaust is not a political prop. Invoking concentration camps does nothing but trivialize the systematic murder of six million Jews and coarsens our public discourse. Hate directed at any entire religious community — Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise — undermines our shared security and values. Invoking false and inappropriate Holocaust analogies against a Jewish elected official is particularly offensive. Leaders should reject Holocaust distortion, not amplify it.

An assailant rams his car into a synagogue in Michigan with the apparent intent to kill Jews inside. As I said on @Morning_Joe, security personnel saved the lives of 140 preschool children in West Bloomfield MI yesterday when an assailant rammed a car packed with explosives into a synagogue. 140 preschool children. It’s not normal that every synagogue, Jewish day school, and summer camp needs a security director. I don't care what you think about a conflict on the other side of the world. If you blame all Jewish people or make wild accusations, you're creating the conditions that allowed this to happen and almost guarantee it will happen again.

Seeing the images and reports from Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, MI and hearing that, once again, Jewish spaces are on lockdown and high alert is all too familiar. And yet you never get used to it.   My heart is with the entire Temple Israel community — those who were inside Temple Israel; those waiting desperately for word about their children and other loved ones; and all those watching this unfold with dread and sorrow. This is a shul that I have visited. I have colleagues and friends who belong to the synagogue. They should not have to live in fear. No community should have to live in fear.   And yet, here we are, again.   @ADL is monitoring the situation closely. Our local staff is on the ground and in touch with law enforcement and the Jewish community in the Detroit area. We are grateful that no one in the synagogue was killed and we pray for the swift recovery of the security officer who was injured in the attack.   Beyond Detroit, our teams are coordinating with other Jewish communities across the country who are on high alert. Analysts with our Center on Extremism are attempting to understand whether there are any extremist links associated with this attack and are monitoring how this incident is being framed online in social media and beyond. We will share more information as we obtain it.   But this did not happen in isolation. In recent months, we have seen a series of attacks of synagogues - Wilshire Blvd Temple (Los Angeles, CA), Congregation Beth Israel (Jackson, MS), Temple Emanu-El (Toronto, Canada), Beth Avraham Yoseph (Toronto, Canada), and Shaarei Shomayim Congregation (Toronto, Canada). These were all real-world acts of violence. Now we add Temple Israel to a list that should not exist.   Antisemitism has surged in recent years. Jewish institutions have been vandalized and violated again and again. Synagogues are not targets; they are houses of prayer, community and refuge. Enough. This has to stop.   We stand with our brothers and sisters in West Bloomfield. We stand with Jewish communities across Michigan and around the world. We stand with all people of good faith who refuse to accept a world where communities live in fear.

Anti-Jewish behavior is entering the mainstream student experience, with nearly half (48.3%) of non-Jewish students reporting witnessing or experiencing it on campus. Today marks 40 years since Leo Frank z"l was posthumously pardoned - a significant day in ADL history. Frank was lynched by a hate-filled mob in Georgia after being unjustly convicted of murder in a trial marred by antisemitism. May his memory be a blessing.

ADL analysts found that the phrase “Epstein Fury” - a conspiratorial reframing of Operation Epic Fury - was mentioned more than 90,000 times by some 60,000 different accounts on X within the first three days of the operation against the Iranian regime. This is part of a sharp rise in antisemitic content we've seen since the operation began. But as ADL's @orensegal shared, one of the problems with online antisemitism is that it's often accompanied by off-line harassment, threats and violent attacks on Jewish people in the US and around the world. washingtonpost.com/technology/202…

Some bad actors have linked the U.S. - Israel operation against the Iranian regime with other popular and often conspiratorial narratives, such as the Epstein files and the murder of Charlie Kirk. Some are referring to Operation Epic Fury as Operation Epstein Fury, framing it as an intentional distraction from the Epstein files, and using it to advance antisemitic sentiments.

Antisemitic and anti-Zionist groups are framing the U.S. - Israel operation against the Iranian regime as the latest evidence of the so-called “Zionist war-machine’s” efforts to co-opt American foreign policy to advance Israeli and/or Jewish interests. Many, including National SJP and Samidoun, have asserted that Americans must mobilize to resist this.

As coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes target the Iranian regime, ADL stands with the United States, Israel and the Iranian people, who deserve dignity and freedom from a regime that murders its own citizens. Since 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been the world's leading state sponsor of antisemitism and terrorism. The regime and its proxies have murdered Jews, Americans and Israelis across the globe with impunity for decades. They have oppressed and brutalized their own people through mass incarceration, torture, and execution. We pray for the safety of American service members in harm's way, Israeli civilians and soldiers, our partners and friends in the Gulf and all others in the region who have already been targeted.
