@dylanwiliam @C_Hendrick It is said that in one particular subject in my school it used to be the case that unless you’d done the reading you weren’t allowed in class. Bit harsh imho but they did in fact end up with amazing value added. Probably because they ran a tight ship in general though.

@C_Hendrick This is why I never assign pre-reading before a presentation. Most won't have done it, so you have to go over it again, which irritates the ones who did.

@BretDevereaux Would you say this reflects differences in terms of deeply rooted class distinctions and social expectations in Hellenistic societies which was less pronounced/deeply rooted in Roman society?

It is striking to me that, as much as a lot of modern pop history on ancient warfare loves 'elite' and 'crack' units of troops, the armies I can think of that really have 'elite' units are Hellenistic armies, which of course famously get wrecked by the Romans, who don't.
