India has 800+ climate-tech startups. Clearly, innovation isn’t the problem, but most building-sector solutions struggle to scale beyond pilots. Adoption remains concentrated among early adopters, while the cost-sensitive middle market stays risk-averse. Slow and expensive certification, weak demand signals, and the lack of clear pathways from pilot to commercial scale continue to hold the sector back. Grateful to the Commissioner and the team from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for joining us at our office for a collaborative exchange of cross-border insights. The imperative now is execution – translating global lessons into grounded action and accelerating India’s energy transition with measurable results.

Two priorities stood out: 🏢 Open Building Models – Transparent, interoperable data frameworks that make building performance measurable, comparable, and scalable. ⚡ Flexible Demand Appliances – Smart hardware that transforms buildings from passive consumers into active grid assets.

🌏 When it comes to decarbonising the built environment, the challenges in California and India are more alike than they are different. At AEEE, we were recently in discussion with J. Andrew McAllister, Commissioner at the California Energy Commission, on what it will take to convert policy ambition into real-world impact.
