Contact your elected officials: wethesecondcolorado.com/elected-offici… Track this and other 2026 Colorado gun legislation: wethesecondcolorado.com/2026-co-firear… What this bill would do: • Force firearm barrel sales through federally licensed firearms dealers (FFLs). • Ban private barrel sales and transfers. • Create new misdemeanor crimes, including for possessing a barrel with alleged "intent to sell". • Broadly define “barrel” to include unfinished or easily convertible parts. • Require FFLs to collect and retain detailed buyer information including full legal name, date of birth, home address, phone number, government DL or ID number, the firearm make/model/caliber the barrel is for, and the employee who processed the sale. • FFLs must ensure anyone purchasing a barrel is not prohibited from possessing a firearm, similar to the requirement used for firearm purchases in Colorado. But nowhere in the bill does it create a pathway to run a background check, and the CBI and NICS system can only be run for firearms as defined under federal law, which DOES NOT include barrels. FFLs will be on the hook for this impossible mandate should a prohibited person buy a barrel through them. This is a major escalation of gun control that criminalizes routine maintenance while targeting lawful gun owners, hunters, hobbyists, builders, small dealers, and more. If passed into law, it would go into effect July 1, 2026.
