Winning isn’t the only outcome that matters. High school sports and activities are about learning through every moment, whether it’s a win, a loss, or the work it takes to come back stronger. That’s where resilience is built, character is shaped, and confidence grows. Because in education-based athletics and activities, every experience moves students forward. AHSAA Softball Spotlight presented by Glenda Mitchell Law Firm - glendamitchelllawfirm.com - 678-721-0417 Chaley Bullington - Phil Campbell High School Bullington, Phil Campbell High School’s lead-off hitter, became the first player in AHSAA history to collect seven hits in a girls’ fast-pitch softball game going 7-for-7 scoring five runs as the Bobcats downed Red Bay 23-12 on March 19. Fast-pitch softball has been a championship sport in the AHSAA since 1995. Her seven hits included six singles, and one double eclipsed the previous record (6) set by five players. The first to get six hits in a single game was Baker’s Carrie Walker in a Class 6A win over Murphy in 2004. Choctaw County’s Shakira Johnson and Tonje Willie each had six hits in a 23-11 win over Millry in a Class 1A battle in 2014. Grissom’s Darian Buss stroked six hits in the Class 7A Tigers’ 12-11 loss to Class 4A Central Florence in 2018, and Holtville’s Bailey Boone had six hits in a 23-1 Class 5A victory over Greenville in a game played in 2024. A total of 22 players in the AHSAA have been reported to have five hits in a single game – including Omeshia Mitchell of Birmingham’s Ramsay High School in a win over Jackson-Olin in 2000 to establish the initial record which was broken by Walker in 2004. Bullington’s five runs scored also tied her with 14 others for third place in the AHSAA Fast-Pitch Softball Record Book for runs scored in a single game. The AHSAA record (7) was set by Park Crossing’s Latoria Cleare in a wild 46-45 win over Sidney Lanier in 2021. Six players have scored six runs in a single game, including Janiya Watts of Park Crossing, Arya Williams, Jai Mister, and Jamil Young of Sidney Lanier in that infamous 2021 contest.
