Uganda's national event aimed at raising awareness, reducing stigma, mobilizing resources, and promoting action to #EndAIDS2030UG

Every 3rd of May, Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating Candlelight Memorial Day but yesterday Uganda celebrated the #CandlelightMemorialDay at Kitante Hill School, Kololo, under the theme: “Ending AIDS by 2030: Embracing the Role of Women,” and I was honored to be part of it.

With reports showing that, as of December 2024, Uganda still records about 101 new HIV infections every day, I believe events like these play a huge role in sensitizing our communities. As you read this, look forward to the Uganda AIDS Marathon happening this November ahead of World AIDS Day. I will definitely be part of this cause and I hope to see you there too. #CandlelightMemorialDay #EndAIDS2030UG #UgandaAIDSMarathon @TASOUganda

The Chief Guest, Hon. @millybabalanda, painted a picture of both success and the remaining challenges. “The achievements did not happen by accident,” she noted, crediting government, health workers, civil society, development partners & the resilience of people living with HIV.

In her keynote address, @AnneTwino, paid glowing tribute to women, describing them as the backbone of the HIV response since the 1980s. “Women became caregivers, counsellors, community mobilisers, & the emotional backbone of families… History must never forget,” she said.

Yesterday, we gathered at Kitante Hill S. S for the #CandlelightMemorialDay, a solemn yet hopeful occasion to honour lives lost to HIV/AIDS and reaffirm Uganda’s commitment to #EndAIDS2030UG It was a powerful display of unity and remembrance. #UgandaAIDSMarathon

In her keynote address at the #CandlelightMemorialDay, @AnneTwino, Deputy @IGGUganda, emphasised that #EndAIDS2030UG cannot succeed without placing women at the centre. “The theme: #EndAIDS2030UG - Embracing the Role of Women — is both timely and important,” she said.

.@aidscommission commended multi-sectoral partnerships in Uganda’s HIV response during today’s Candlelight Memorial Day in Kololo. “We sincerely appreciate your continued partnership and support,” they said, noting that coordination alone is not enough without collaboration

Happening Today: The #CandlelightMemorialDay is kicking off right now. Started with a walk at 7:30am from City Square, we are now at Kitante Hill Secondary School grounds, Kololo. Come through, light a candle, remember, and stand with us. We’re already here. #EndAIDS2030UG
