African Export-Import Bank - Afreximbank
Africa’s investment landscape is changing, and with it, the role of African finance and project execution. At the 2025 African Investment Forum @AIFMarketPlace in Rabat, Mrs. Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President, Intra-African Trade & Export Development at Afreximbank, joined development leaders, including Daniel M. Best, President of the Caribbean Development Bank; Abdallah Almusaibeeh, President of BADEA - Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa; Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of Africa Finance Corporation @africa_finance; Admassu Tadesse, Group President of Trade and Development Bank Group - @TdbGroup; Alain Ebobissé, CEO of Africa50 Group; and Mpho Mokwele, Group Executive at Development Bank of Southern Africa (@DBSA_Bank), for a high-level conversation at the Africa Investment Forum on scaling investment through PPPs and development finance. She underlined how African DFIs are now driving major continental projects - citing the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Tanzania, operationalised in 2025 after being conceptualised in 1973, and delivered end-to-end by African governments, African EPC contractors, and African capital, with Afreximbank leading financing and providing US$700 million in contracting guarantees. Today’s constraints, she noted, are no longer a lack of capacity but fragmented markets, border inefficiencies that inflate logistics costs, supply-side weaknesses, and differing financing frameworks that slow scale. Unlocking investment at continental levels will require full implementation of the AfCFTA, alignment across DFIs, and deeper project preparation to move ideas to closure faster. She pointed to Afreximbank’s responsiveness in trade finance and its commitment to staying with projects from concept through execution, as demonstrated by transactions emerging from the Africa Investment Forum platform, such as Nyanza Light Metals. Africa has the institutions, capital and technical depth to deliver its own infrastructure future - the task now is to clear bottlenecks, integrate markets and finance at scale. #Afreximbank #AIF2025 #Infrastructure #Investment #AfCFTA
