The Federal Reserve paid $12.1 billion in Interest on Reserve Balances to big banks, including foreign ones, last year while posting a $18.7 billion loss. It's been since September of 2022 that the Fed has been operating at a loss. They’ve created a massive $245 billion IOU they call a “deferred asset” that American families will eventually have to foot the bill for.
