The 4 digit ATM PIN exists because of one woman who could only remember 4 numbers🤯 In 1967, a Scottish inventor named John Shepherd-Barron was lying in the bath when it hit him. Banks closed at 3pm. He kept running out of cash over the weekend. There had to be a better way. So he designed a machine that could dispense cash any time of day without a human on the other side. The ATM. Barclays Bank loved it. They wanted to install one immediately. The only problem was security. How do you make sure the right person is using the machine? Shepherd-Barron's solution was a 6 digit personal identification number. Six digits felt secure enough. Six digits felt right. He went home and told his wife Caroline. She told him she could only reliably remember 4 digits. That was the end of the conversation. Shepherd-Barron trusted her completely and changed it to 4. The first ATM went live outside a Barclays branch in Enfield, London on June 27, 1967. Reg Varney, a British actor, was the first person to use it. He withdrew £10. Today, billions of bank accounts rely on PINs to stay secure. And the now-familiar 4-digit PIN? It traces back, in part, to one completely ordinary conversation between a husband and his wife.🫣
