Today, the @coe Committee of Ministers in Chișinău took a historic step toward establishing the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine ⚖️🇺🇦 Behind this decision are years of work by lawyers, diplomats, parliamentarians and partners. I recall March 15, 2022, when Ukraine’s all-women parliamentary delegation came to the extraordinary @PACE_News session that led to Russia’s expulsion from the CoE. It was in that very resolution that the need for accountability for the crime of aggression and the creation of a tribunal was mentioned for the first time. Accountability and a just, lasting peace are inseparable. Grateful to the 36 states and the EU for joining this effort!

We stand firmly with our member party delivering the reforms Romania urgently needs, reforms that strengthen institutions and keep the country moving forward. The cost of this political crisis is not abstract. It is paid by Romanian citizens. By delaying vital EU funds, these parties are gambling with jobs, investments and Romania’s entire economic future. Romania must stay on its European path. 🇪🇺 No more obstruction. No more delays.

Today marks 77 years of the Council of Europe 🎉 Since 1949, it has united 46 countries around human rights, democracy and the rule of law, creating a common legal space for 700+ million people. 77 years of human rights in practice.

As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we must face a sobering reality: press freedom is weakening across Europe. The crisis is structural. Beyond the physical dangers faced by journalists on the frontlines in Ukraine, a convergence of threats is putting the bedrock of our democracies under significant strain. The landscape for journalists and media is becoming increasingly challenging as they face legal and political pressure, threats to physical and digital safety and structural erosion due to media ownership concentration, economic pressure, political interference in public broadcasting and the dominance of internet platforms. When journalists are silenced, the public’s right to know is the first casualty. The standards exist, but implementation is too slow. We have the tools; we now need the political will. I encourage member states to: ➡️Investigate all attacks on journalists and end impunity ➡️Protect critical reporting and public service media from undue political and economic pressure ➡️Ensure journalists can work freely and safely ➡️Implement the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and Council of Europe standards, particularly on journalists’ safety and on abusive lawsuits (SLAPPs) #WorldPressFreedomDay #PressFreedom #CouncilOfEurope #SafetyOfJournalists

Grateful to @Europarl_EN and fellow MEPs for the strong vote – 446 in favour – on a timely and much-needed resolution 🇺🇦🇪🇺 I would like to particularly highlight some key provisions: ✔️backing the establishment and rapid operationalisation of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression; ✔️ supporting the EU’s full membership in the International Claims Commission and urging swift accession by Member States to launch its work; ✔️ welcoming the long-awaited approval of the €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine and endorsing the 20th sanctions package against Russia; ✔️ condemning Russia’s systematic attempts to erase Ukraine’s history, culture, language and identity, with cultural damage already exceeding €4 billion! The EU simply cannot fund pro-Kremlin narratives of an aggressor state while that same regime destroys Ukrainian museums and heritage sites.
