At my daughter’s school they announced that every 6th grader must have an iPad. We asked questions about how the iPads would be used and what evidence there was of educational benefit or harm. The school responded by bringing in an Apple sales team to give parents a hard sell.

Jessica Winter has been raising her children to detest A.I. Then her daughter’s public middle school began receiving Google Chromebooks, which came pre-installed with an all-ages version of Gemini, a suite of A.I. tools. “When my daughter, who is in sixth grade, begins writing an essay, she gets a prompt: ‘Help me write,’ ” Winter writes. “If she is starting work on a slide-show presentation, the prompt is ‘Help me visualize.’ She shoos away these interruptions, but they persist: ‘Help me edit.’ ‘Beautify this slide.’ ” Proponents of generative A.I. in elementary and middle schools argue that such early exposure will foster digital-media literacy, and prepare them for a future in which most professions are steeped in A.I. But the technology also poses significant cognitive and social-emotional risks to young people. NYC observations after spending last week there • people are actually outside touching grass (or cement 😅) • very few AI ads or billboards around • even cafes i went to - very few screens with claude code or cursor or some coding tool • people are way more open to socializing. everyone is willing to strike up a conversation (not about AI agents) • the energy is electric - everyone’s moving with purpose. • found a way to talk to folks without mentioning AI • way more artists, and non traditional creators. Met an actual physical product designer which was cool. it’s genuinely refreshing to remember there’s a whole world outside the feed been traveling the last few days and the SF tech bubble makes it easy to forget how alive real cities feel. sorry SF, you’re still home… but perspective is healthy 🤷‍♂️

Here's the thing: when big companies go down to 8 weeks, then smaller companies and startups will go down to 4, if anything. This is simply not enough time for most families, especially in a world where remote work is also disappearing. Daycare won't even take babies under 6 weeks old. We know how this story plays out. Mothers will leave the paid workforce. We shouldn't accept this as the new normal. The more we talk about it the harder it is for the bar to keep dropping.

In London hireable Lime scooters top out at 12.5 mph. That means that if you rode one round the London marathon course at top speed, never braking or backing off, by the time Sawe had finished you'd be more than a mile behind him. Absolute madness - as someone pointed out!
