🚨 New paper alert! ❄️ How many glaciers will exist by 2100 at +1.5 °C vs +4 °C warming? Our new study led by @LanderVanTricht , projects the extinction year of ~200,000 glaciers worldwide. 🌍 Can you imagine the Alps with only 20 glaciers remaining?

Stunning overview of former bed of the now gone Birch Glacier shot yesterday from the right lateral moraine 😲😱 INCREDIBLE to think that there WAS a glacier here just few days ago! The area above the glacier still holds ~300,000m3 of debris Source D. Farinotti @VAW_glaciology

🚨Paper Alert! A new paper, co-authored by VAW Matthias Huss, shows glaciers worldwide have lost over 9,000 Gt of ice since 1976, raising sea levels by ~25 mm. 🌍 The paper presents a global dataset of annual glacier mass change from 1976–2024. Explore: 📊 doi.org/10.5194/essd-1…

The Arctic is getting wetter. Higher temperatures→more evaporation from oceans→higher atmospheric humidity→total precipitation (snow+rain) is increasing. Snowfall would be increasing were it not for warming that crosses the 0°C threshold more often. Thus, the Arctic precipitation increase is dominated by more rainfall. @AMAP_Arctic
