On 21st March, there will be a tribute to the Mer de Glace, featuring a concert in the ice cave and talks by a glaciologist! 🧊🎶 Don’t miss it if you’re in the area! 😍

The headwaters of the Upper Romanche, dominated by the Grande Ruine (3,765 m) 🏔️ The faint ridge visible in the foreground on the left is a moraine deposited by the Romanche Glacier we dated to the Younger Dryas (~12,000 years ago) 🧊⏱️

Cryospheric geomorphology is amazing! 😍 Here is a delicately carved Neoglacial moraine (Réou d'Arsine Gl.), the lower part of which has evolved into a magnificent rock glacier with concentric lobes 🧊🌊 The whole being heavily laden with snow, even on the steepest sections! ❄️

Arsine Glacier yesterday! 🥰 One of my fav site in the Alps (not biased opinion) 🤍 A perfect cirque and headwall 🏔️ A fantastic and continuous moraine complex 🧊 A record of Holocene glacier advances (and RAs) now TCN-dated ⏱️ See our paper here: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@elnabogordo That's true! (I should have writtent 'Alps' instead of 'Europe' here!) But Aegypius monachus don't breed at high altitudes in the Alps! It was only very recently that they were reintroduced to the southern French Alps (the Baronnies), which are hilly regions!

Seeing Europe's largest bird soaring through the ominous sky above Mer de Glace really gives you goosebumps! 🥰🦅

Walking on Mer de Glace yesterday (here at 1900 m) after starting from valley very bottom (no cable car)! 🏔️ Breaking the trail in heavy/deep snow, struggling every single step through a labyrinth of huge boulders and reluctant alders, hiding deep holes! ❄️👣 La Vie, la Vraie!

Belvedere Glacier (Macugnaga, IT) 2015 | 2023 This debris-covered glacier flows on E side of Monte Rosa 🧊🏔️ Here we see, based on UAV photogrammetry, the recent downwasting of the tongue, as well as moraine sliding on the glacier-proximal side (upper left) 📽️ Alex Ferrier 1/

On 14th March, an impressive rock avalanche occurred on Cotopaxi (5,897 m asl, EC)! 🔥 A rock mass detached from the Yanasacha summit cliff and triggered an ice avalanche on the glacier! 🌊🧊 Deposit spans ~1000 vertical distance btw 5,700 and 4,700 m asl! 😲 📷 Pablo Chiquiza

This was the very front of Mer de Glace yesterday (15th March)! ❄️ Ice outcrop is visible at the foreground! Having travelled all this way from accumulation zone (11 km), ice is ~500 yrs old at this spot, where its journey ends...🧊 Charmoz are playing hide&seek at the back! 🏔️

@david_belay As I have scrambled up from the very botom (Les Tines) I has snowhoes, but this was clearly not the best tool. In fact all this hike up via Le Chapeau is made up of large boulder fields hiding big holes... very painful!

@EcoRXChampion Yes, of course. These are extremes fueled by record sea surface temperatures But there will always be idiots to tell you that this proves global warming isn’t happening, even though in a week’s time there won’t be a trace of it left as winter heatwaves are now becoming frequent

@subfossilguy Incredible snowfall! We're seeing these extremes intensify with climate instability. Stunning but a worrying trend. ❄️

This winter the heaviest snow events have concerned the southern fringe of the Alps! ❄️ Remember Prato Nevoso in Dec! Latest example here at Macugnaga, at the foot of Monte Rosa east face, with 1.48 m in 24h at 1,360m asl! 😲
