1/2 I commend to you a superb new book (available online for free) by literacy experts Rob Tierney & David Pearson: "Fact-Checking the Science of Reading." It provides a meticulously detailed, scrupulously fair-minded review of SoR claims: literacyresearchcommons.org

I'm so grateful that so many brilliant educational minds are refuting the story that media and gullible followers spread using opinion as shallow justification. It makes me feel hopeful for brighter days ahead. readingrecovery.org/marie-clay-a-p…

Discredit others to make a name for yourself? Consider renowned & respected literacy expert Dr. P. David Pearson’s take on Marie Clay’s legacy. Don’t be sold a story.
Stephen Parker@ParkerPhonics

Marie Clay's legacy in literacy may be the worst of all time. Why? She was the inspiration behind Ken Goodman and Frank Smith, who in turn, inspired @LucyCalkins @JSerravallo, and @FountasPinnell Now NZ, Clay's home country, tosses Reading Recovery out. newshub.co.nz/home/politics/…

"the strategies for 1st grade vs those strategies that you need for success in 3rd and 4th gr, they could look quite different. I do think that it behooves all of us, anybody that's involved in education to try to continuously improve." stoked to be part of that w/ @RRNA_HUB
Jennifer Serravallo@JSerravallo

Have you heard about his studies of Reading Recovery showing off-the-charts strong results in the short term, but diminished results in the long term? We discuss implications for intervention, what we can & can't conclude from these studies, and research-classroom partnerships.

“Literacy acquisition is a complex process for which there is no single key to success. Teaching phonemic awareness does not ensure that children will read and write. Many other competencies must be taught for this to happen.” (NRP, 2000, p.2-7) @OHEducation @MikeDeWine

@susanoha @washingtonpost Disappointing- nothing fresh or nuanced here. Inaccuracies & simple takes again, sigh. If phonics was the answer all children would be able to read and we wouldn’t be talking about this anymore. Phonics is necessary but not sufficient & this has been known for a very long time.
