I was asked what America and Princeton University mean to me. With the University’s help we made a very short video, where I talk about Princeton and why all of our academic enterprises are so important to the US and to the world. As you can see, this is very personal for me. We are not “the elite,” if anything, we are the working class of society. We are not the people at the top of the mountain looking down, we are the people at the bottom of the mountain trying to help everyone else get to the top. To my mind there is no more noble profession than being a scientist and an educator.

@chitownzack @talleyberrybaby You say this ignoring the fact that in Gone with the Wind the protagonist was literally Katie Scarlett O'Hara. I doubt the author did that to be ironic. The movie even talks about how the family is looked down upon for being Irish Catholic despite being wealthy slaveowners.

I was once serving a table full of Irish people and they heard me say my name was “Talley” and one asked “Is that your first name or last?” and I said “last” and they said “Where’d you get that good Irish last name from” and I said “slavery” and they reported me to to my manager

@Pingosaurus Thank you for taking the time to teach the foundation crew. I agree that teaching on the foundation year and watching the students go on and be successful is very rewarding.

I start my UG teaching next week, and due to the nature of the course I teach we provide video lectures and in person teaching. I listened back to my recordings and you clearly hear Frank bellowing on some of them. Wondering if I can offer extra credit for students who spot it.

@STEMyBanda I agree with you. I more meant in the tongue in cheek way that mathematicians will call something like a point multi-dimensional in a weird basis set.

I have something to say. I do not like sweets so I generally avoid them all. I had pie for the first time in my life this Thanksgiving. It was an apple pie. It was buttery, crunchy, chewy, sweet, tart, crumbly, savory, it was so many things. I just ate the last slice. I cried.

@partygeese @CartoonsHateHer Ignoring the giant wound women are typically bleeding for 6-8 weeks postpartum. Not the most pleasant environment for intimacy unless you like things looking like a murder scene afterwards.

@CartoonsHateHer I think people forget that you’re not SUPPOSED to be having sex until at least 6 weeks regardless. The area where the placenta detaches is quite literally a giant wound. If you’re not trying to give your wife a horrible infection, leave her alone.

I actually do have empathy for anyone- male or female- in a long term dead bedroom situation, but the first 6 weeks after a baby is born...respectfully, if you are doing your job as a parent you should not have the energy to be that horny.

@vangoghswiftie @DrLMRobinson Your comment suggests that you are single and do not have children. Daycare for two kids is easily $25-30k a year. Are you suggesting that people with families shouldn't be in academia?

@DrLMRobinson Unpopular opinion. I don't feel like we need to be making that much more... I'd kill for a tenure job for 50k. It's a job I don't find hard at all. With "flexible" (not less) hours and that is incredibly fullfiling. I would rather the people in academia not be there for money.
