Commentary by Ambassador of Russia to Israel Anatoly Viktorov on the reburial in Ukraine of one of the OUN leaders I took note of a pompous transfer of the remains of the second leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) A.Melnik and his spouse from Luxembourg to Ukraine. Right now their coffins are on display at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Kiev. Citizens are invited to come and pay respect to “an outstanding Ukrainian statesman and his wife.” Their reburial with military honors is scheduled for 24 May at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the Kiev region. This initiative is in line with the program, approved by the Kiev regime in 2025, to “create a Pantheon of outstanding Ukrainians of the 20th century.” V.Zelensky also announced ongoing negotiations with the Netherlands authorities regarding the return from Rotterdam of the remains of the first OUN leader E.Konovalets. This geography is no coincidence. Many OUN militants and leaders took refuge in the West after World War II, evading the retribution they deserved. In modern Ukraine the OUN leaders are honored and glorified in every way, dozens of monuments were erected to them, in their honor the streets, once named after the Soviet soldiers who liberated Europe from the Nazi plague, were renamed. A.Melnik, E.Konovalets, S.Bandera, R.Shukhevych and others like them are elevated to the rank of national heroes. It is no coincidence that the OUN greeting “Glory to Ukraine! – Glory to the Heroes!” became the official statutory greeting of the Ukrainian armed forces in 2018. Who exactly are these “heroes”? The OUN was a militant nationalist organization that preached an ideology of hatred toward Russians, Jews, Poles, Hungarians as well as members of certain other ethnic groups. Both A.Melnik and E.Konovalets were Nazi collaborators; they idolized Hitler and took pride in their cooperation with Nazi Germany. They received funding and intelligence from the Nazis, carried out joint political and propaganda activities. The official OUN propaganda portrayed Jews as a pillar of the Soviet system and used a derogatory term “Judeo-Bolshevism” in reference to the political system then in place in USSR. The hands of the OUN leaders are directly and indirectly stained with blood of the Holocaust victims, in the perpetration of which the OUN members actively participated on the Ukrainian territory during World War II. With a cruelty that astonished even the German Nazis, the OUN members carried out massacres against those they considered “subhumans” in Babi Yar, Odessa, Lvov and many other places. The persistent attempts by the current Kiev clique to rewrite history, fraudulently substitute heroes for the Ukrainian people, imposing on them and the entire world a perverted vision of the events of the Great Patriotic War and World War II are doomed to failure. The Ukrainian people are not a gathering of illiterate peasants, they are capable of sorting everything out and identifying their true heroes. The crimes of the Nazis and their henchmen have no statute of limitations and will never be forgotten. And the neo-Nazism in Ukraine must be condemned and eradicated.
