The DA-led City of Cape Town’s proposal to construct a wall along the N2 is a deeply troubling attempt to entrench spatial exclusion and divide communities under the guise of fighting crime. Such measures echo the painful legacy of apartheid spatial planning and risk normalising new forms of segregation in democratic South Africa. Lehlohonolo Phakoe, a young emerging farmer, and Daneman Smit, an established white commercial farmer, chose cooperation over conflict. Mr Smit supported Phakoe’s family enterprise by donating the planting of 50 hectares of soya beans and 50 hectares of yellow maize.
