In my train travel from Coimbatore to Chennai, I just bought this extremely fragrant, golden saffron bunch of flowers for just Rs.30 plucked from the Yelagiri hills of the Eastern Ghats! The Sanskrit name Champaka is 1000s of y/o, appearing in literature and devotional poetry. The petals are thick and fleshy. This helps the flower hold its perfume oils for long periods even in tropical heat. Unlike flowers that shout with bright colors for pollinators, Shenbagam leans heavily on its USP scent! I do not use perfumes, but I read that the essential oils taken from these strong scented flowers were used in 'Joy' by Jean Patou, once one of the world's most expensive perfumes and continue to be used in other perfumes.
