In addition to speaking at our own session at ACES: The Society for Editing, Stylebook Editor Anna Jo Bratton was a judge for a rowdy spelling bee and Stylebook Product Manager Colleen Newvine helped officiate a game show for copy editors. Anna Jo was even the correct answer to a question in the game show. Then Anna Jo and Colleen enjoyed a happy hour with Chicago Manual of Style’s Jenny Ringblom and Peter Sokolowski of Merriam-Webster. This is what it looks like to spend a few days with people who care deeply about language.

Many thanks to ACES: The Society for Editing for treating the Stylebook's session at your conference last week like big news. ACES sent an email to its members on Friday with the subject line, "ACES Atlanta 2026: Big reveal! AP announces Stylebook changes." The email links to this blog post by Gerri Berendzen: aceseditors.org/news/2026/ap-a… #ACES2026

Do you put a question mark inside or outside quotation marks? That depends on the meaning. Are you asking a question about what's in quotes? Then the question mark goes outside: Who wrote "Gone With the Wind"? Is the quoted matter a question? It goes inside: He asked, "How long will it take?"

Do your coworkers ask you to proof their copy but then glaze over when you explain why you don't use a hyphen in compound modifiers with adverbs ending in -ly? Sign up for the AP Stylebook Workshop to connect with people who share your love of language. The online classroom includes discussion forums to ask questions, get ideas and commiserate with fellow word nerds. store.stylebooks.com/ap-stylebook-w…

We have created a separate entry for "Native Americans, Indigenous people/peoples." Previously, the entry was included as part of the book’s race-related coverage entry. Why did we move it? Racial issues are vital to consider when writing about these identities. But identity as Native American or Indigenous peoples goes beyond race, reaching into topics of sovereignty and self-determination of tribal nations and citizens. This move reflects that broader classification. We announced this change at ACES: The Society for Editing on Friday. This guidance is live on AP Stylebook Online now.

You've been asking for this one for years. We heard you. We announced a change in AP style at the @ACESEditors conference today: It's now healthcare, one word, in all uses. We also changed childcare and daycare, closing them up to one word rather than two. This guidance is live on AP Stylebook Online now.

As the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster approaches on April 26, we are confirming that the AP uses the spelling that’s been used since the disaster. When relevant, we note that the name of the site in Ukrainian is Chornobyl. It is located in northern Ukraine.

We added an entry to our latest AP Stylebook Online Topical Guide: Avoid the term “evacuation order” when a nation orders people in another country or territory to leave a specific area where it may attack. Nations don’t have the authority to order the evacuation of people in other countries. Instead, use specific terms such as: alert, sweeping warning, told/urged people to flee, instructed people to leave. For example: Israel issued an alert that it plans to strike a building in a southern neighborhood of Beirut. The term “evacuation order” can be used in quotes, but explain.
