#PT582 #KR bit.ly/2JDOPbj Exercise can "substantially reduce the risk of developing or dying from heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and high blood pressure." which is a great thing to tell pts as a reason they should exercise!

#PT582 #KR To motivate this population we need to listen to their fears&really understand how to ease them into exercise. If we give them too much of an exercise or one that scares them right off the bat it will be hard to gain their trust&show them how beneficial exercise can be

#PT582 #SG I didn't find a way to screen for tendinopathies but did find suggestions for decreasing the risk of developing them. bit.ly/2mtvW1t Shoe adaptations can have preventive effect on achilles tendinopathies. Balance training for patellar&Achilles tendinopathies.

@MichelleRumpel I think we can spread the word by showing how educated we can be on the topic & reaching out to the community. But I think its sometimes difficult bc often other therapists in the clinic didn't feel they had the expertise to treat concussions.

@MichelleRumpel #PT582 Yes I actually have! I worked at a clinic with a PT who worked with many concussion pts. He did a great job networking w/ drs & schools. pts saw the benefits & were amazed that PT for concussions was not more common!

#PT582 #MR bit.ly/2zGcQyK This article mentions a study that found concussions are managed just as safely by PTs as by physicians in making return-to-play decisions. I think we as PTs spend a lot more time with these pts&are able to observe more signs/symptoms&progress.

#PT582 #DS bit.ly/2L9i22m It's interesting bc research like this meta-analysis say it might slightly improve pain & function early on, but not enough to be clinically significant. However, PTs I have talked to often say they see better outcomes!

#PT582 #AB I think it would depend a lot on their goals. For athletes we would want to focus on running, cycling, etc. but for those who aren't at that high level we would only need to fatigue them in their normal activities like walking or lifting to prevent re-injury.

#PT582 #KS I think in some instances PT's can use evidence based practice to advise pts on certain diets. For ex., I worked with a PT who always advised concussion pts on a specific diet to follow based upon research he had found to best help the healing process.

@susansSPT #PT582 Great find Susan! I think having a speedier recovery is definitely of value to these patients. Do you think aquatic therapy is something you will utilize in the future?

#AP #PT582 This article shows that there are several benefits that can be seen in patients with ACLR recovery. The greatest difference was seen in the speed of recovery. The guidelines provided show beginning aquatic after 6-9 weeks bit.ly/2tPqaKV bit.ly/2Mt9alh

#pt582 #AP I found this really neat article about the combination of aquatic therapy and land therapy for ACL reconstruction soccer players! Thought you might find it interesting :) says an accelerated aqua program can help! journals.co.za/content/m_sajs…

@AlfredoSayeg #PT582 I think you can progress the demands in the pool and really challenge athletes. A lot of running, jumping & drills that are used in sports practices can be used in the pool. I think we can also get creative and find ways to make it sports specific with the right resources.

# NAUPT582 #AP This article might be a little dated, but Zamariolo et al. found that rehabilitating an ACL through aquatic therapy lead to earlier functional recovery. Although, I am not sue the protocols translate to return to sports as the demands are higher. Thoughts?

@JHaggerty_SPT I agree! I think its a great idea to try to pair with local public pools to incorporate the interventions. I wonder even if patients have pools at home if we could add into their HEP if we felt comfortable enough with their ability to perform the exercises.

...functional improvements. I would highly consider using this approach during earlier phases, but, due to specificity, I would not perform this approach for late phase rehabilitation. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8047560

@RacineSpt #PT582 Great find Kevin! Expediting return to play by up to 3 months is huge for an athlete and definitely think they would find value in this. Do you think you will use these type of program (aquatic&land therapy) with your future athletes?

@Bri_RedaSPT #PT582 Thanks Bri! This article was great in talking about how it could introduce athletes to more advanced exercises sooner in the water. Do you think the low impact nature of pool therapy helps them to recover better before next session?

#PT582 #AP I found this article bit.ly/2KwtlOw talking about how a PT uses aquatic & land therapy to give their pt's with acl injuries quicker recoveries. I would absolutely advocate for aqua therapy it does great things for pts! I am unaware of any contraindications.

#PT582 #AP bit.ly/2tN9lzY Yes I would advocate for the use of aquatic for return to sport after ACL surgery because it allows resistive exercises early on in rehabilitation, which can help lead to a sooner recovery. Aquatic is esp. effective for LE injuries in athletes

@SavannahG_SPT #PT582 I think its great that higher reps can be obtained in the water. Do you think being able to get more reps in the water is important for athletes in specific sports because of the endurance their sport might demand?

#PT582 #AP bit.ly/2tBC0Ja Even though this is about hip injuries, it finds that aquatic therapy can help athletes post-op return to play. Aquatic therapy can allow for higher reps to be completed thus inc physical benefits + overall gains in ROM, coordination, and more.

@nathan_nwm27 @NAUPT582 #PT582 Thanks for sharing Nathan! I love how you brought up the specificity of aquatic therapy and I also wonder how well it will transfer over to specific sports. Do you think there are ways we could make it more specific for each athlete?

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #AP This RCT found more self-reported functional improvement in pts. undergoing aquatic therapy than land therapy post ACLR. Given role of specificity I feel aquatic rehab may be contraindicated for later stages of ACLR rehab in athletes. bit.ly/2KuTvRS
