Just to gain a temporary AI benchmark advantage. The amnesia is already here. Future models will generate elegant sentences to beat Al sorts of tests about history, science, and literature. They will do so on the ashes of the books that once contained those sentences. The generation that built these systems will leave its children fluent machines and emptier shelves. That is the real product of Project Panama and its successors: not intelligence, but a carefully engineered cultural void, papered over with synthetic prose and non-disclosure agreements. We are left to forget to remember. We are The Amnesia Generation with our brains being put into a meat grinder and fed back to us.

We live on a planet where the country that overthrew Iran's democracy in 1953 is "concerned about Iranian authoritarianism." Where the country that funded Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons program in the 1980s launched a war in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein for having chemical weapons. Where the country that armed, trained, and created the conditions for the Taliban spent twenty years fighting the Taliban. Where the country that sanctioned Iraq through the 1990s, killing an estimated 500,000 children through the denial of medicine and food, a number Madeleine Albright called "worth it" on national television, explained that it was doing so because it cared about the Iraqi people. I am not asking you to hate America. I am asking you to read the sentences above without looking away, and then tell me, with a straight face, that the question is whether to believe them.

Let's be precise about what propaganda can and cannot do. Propaganda can shape the information environment. It can make certain questions unsayable and certain assumptions invisible. It can manufacture genuine belief in false things. It can make violence look like protection and extraction look like generosity. It can do all of this and do it effectively across generations. What propaganda cannot do is remove the capacity for doubt. Every society under heavy propaganda produces dissidents. People who noticed the gap between the official story and what they could see with their own eyes. Who asked the question that wasn't supposed to be asked. Who followed the evidence past the point where comfort stopped. These people existed in Nazi Germany. They existed in apartheid South Africa. They existed in the antebellum American South. They exist in every heavily propagandized society in history. They were a minority. But they existed. Which means the propaganda did not make critical thought impossible. It made it costly. There is a difference between impossible and costly. The difference is called courage. And a framework that erases that difference, that says "propagandized population, therefore no accountability, therefore no courage required," is a framework that has decided in advance that courage will not be asked of anyone. That is a very gentle framework. It is also a framework in which nothing ever changes.

I was taught for years that @DrAndyWakefield had committed fraud - it was not true. His prior paper - written with @PeterDaszak - showed that measles virus was a contributor to Crohn's. The Lancet paper showed that bowel disease was a feature of severe disability after vaccination. Wakefield had to be destroyed to protect the vaccine industry or it would have collapsed in 1998. In the case of the Wakefield saga, they were aided by the @bmj_latest who commissioned Brian Deer to fabricate a fake story about "fraud" because they were being paid by GSK and Merck - the very vaccine makers who stood to be eviscerated by the truth about their product's safety. They are on track to die without ever having their vaccine disability recognised.
