And quite frankly killing a level 5 pc that's not being dumb is just not good story telling

You play a game to have fun
Nat 20s are supposed to be this big thing, and if you get one, a player expects an outcome
This doesn't always mean they succeed; they get the best reasonable outcome

Litterally everything I do as a DM is for the players bc as much as it's my world, but it's OUR GAME and OUR STORY
I will change the stat sheets of an enemy mid-GAME if it means making the GAME more fun for my players

@ARthirtyfour I always tell plays the rules I am using a head of time at the start of the campaign, like any DM should, including that 1 and 20 is only on attacks not skill checks.
I've even had a player succeed on a 1 several times.
And I've used the alt rules too.
