The wreck of USS Thresher (SSN 593) lies about 220 miles east of Cape Cod at roughly 8,400 feet on a flat seabed. The implosion tore the submarine into many sections that now sit spread over about half a mile. The bow is smashed and partly buried. The sail is broken and lies apart from the pressure hull. The reactor compartment sits as a twisted cylinder with frames bent inward. The stern with the propeller fell farther back and shows heavy crushing. Most of the pressure hull looks flattened from the instant collapse. Plates are curled inward and ribs are exposed. Debris fields contain piping, cables, torpedo parts, lockers, and tools. The site is cold, dark, and quiet with little current. Corrosion is slow at that depth, so the metal keeps its shape even after sixty years. No fuel or radiation hazard has been found because the reactor shut down before the sinking and remains sealed. The site is protected and only visited by deep research robots from the Navy and Woods Hole teams. USS Thresher sank on 10 April 1963 during deep dive tests after leaving Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She began a test dive with escort ship USS Skylark. At around 1,300 feet she reported minor issues. At about 2,400 feet a silver brazed joint in the engine room seawater piping likely failed and allowed seawater to spray on electrical boards. The seawater shorted the power supply and the reactor shut down as a safety action. With no power, the submarine lost propulsion and could not stop her descent. The crew tried to blow main ballast tanks using high pressure air, but moisture in the lines turned to ice and blocked valves. The submarine continued to sink tail first. Radio messages reported attempts to surface, then a final unreadable signal. After passing crush depth near 2,400 to 2,600 feet, the pressure hull collapsed instantly. The implosion took less than a second and killed all 129 aboard. This loss led the Navy to create the SUBSAFE program, which changed design, construction, and testing rules for all later submarines.

🧵 63 years ago today, the most advanced submarine in the world slipped beneath the waves off Cape Cod... and never came back up. 129 men. 8,400 feet of water. 3 minutes of garbled radio. This is the story of USS Thresher 👇

If Japan added a second amendment type deal and did a “service equals citizenship” type deal (the USA already offers this) they’d solve the problem in no time haha. Recruit right outside of US bases even

@wolf_blazzing @Jason_R_Burt It’s not a photograph, it’s someone’s interpretation of Yorktown based on Ballard’s photo of the Yorktown. Kind of difficult to get the whole wreck well lit.
