There is no way back from this Labour government. They are completely out of touch. They make a inherited mess far worse partly by shouting about “black holes in the public finances” that they new they would inherit; and in virtually every era of policy and governance, they don’t even make the hard decisions that would be unpopular but by the time of the next election seem justified - it’s like you have just been viciously mugged in the street and they say the waiting time for the ambulance is not 3hours 62 minutes but after triage, is now 3 hours 47 minutes. And speaking of waiting times everyone knows they are fiddling the NHS waiting times by introducing “waiting times list” which when you get to the top of it allows you to join a new list for a consultant that restarts again at 0. x.com/Bounce_BackLoa…

Just heard interview with Amanda’s Hopgood from councillor Durham council on the need for price controls on the private sector provider child care purchased by local council Social Care. I know quite a bit about this sector. And as with most interventions into market pricing (recent minimum wage rises, zero hours workers employment rights , tenants rights and discussions on supermarket pricing) the unintended consequences of any such proposals are often worse than any temporary relief of costs. Recruitment to such specialist care services is in competition with other non care sectors and as the living wage has risen in proportion to the average wage, salary compression has made it difficult to recruit and train in these sectors. Of course it should be remembered that even before austerity councils contracted their in house care homes across the country and used the third sector to meet demand. The idea that profit is intrinsically amoral in these sectors is of course ideological and naive., as the majority of residential care sits in the private sector because the councils themeselves could not attract investment to upgrade buildings and utilities in the way much of the private sector could.

My father, Malcolm, died yesterday morning at 6.35. 91 years old. Fantastic life, well lived and a blessedly swift departure. We should all be so lucky. Please pray for his soul.

Oh, but wait, wasn't the MAGA base divided, hadn't President Trump's Iran policy and handling of the Epstein files undermined his reputation, wasn’t Tucker Carlson and MTG and others on the ball? "Thomas Massie lost the Kentucky 4th Congressional District Republican primary on May 19, 2026, to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein. Final results showed Gallrein winning with approximately 55% of the vote to Massie’s 45%." It’s all a case of...aethelstan.substack.com/p/the-deep-sta…

🚨I am being told that the antisemitic man in this video shouting “Hitler knew how to deal with these people” is employed by @AldiUK in Shirley, Solihull. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

During my week away from work my colleagues had started putting forks in the spoon holder. Perhaps a misguided attempt at making sporks. But it’s as well that I’m back.

How many of you good folk remember when everything was closed on Sunday (and in many cases early closing for some shops one day in the week)? How times have changed - everything is now instant and accessible 24/7… #eastend #history
