Anglers: this matters more than you might think. Parliamentary committees rely on evidence — and angler experience is a vital part of that. By completing this short survey, you are helping strengthen the case presented to parliament, ensuring that what anglers see on the water is reflected in the questions ministers and water bosses are forced to answer. 👉 Complete the survey: forms.office.com monkeylink.co/3cee90

A huge shout-out to our 800+ Water Quality Monitoring Network volunteers, who have reached the major milestone of 10,000 water samples tested! Through these efforts, the WQMN has built the largest regular citizen science water quality monitoring database in the UK. Samples are tested for a range of parameters, which provide a detailed picture of the state of our rivers. Our recent 2nd annual report revealed that 34% of Phosphate measurements, and 45% of Nitrate measurements failed to reach good ecological status... Our dedicated volunteers aren't just collecting data but using it to fight for change. Many WQMN volunteers have a seat at the table in decision making processes, whether in local catchment meetings, conversations with MPs and open dialogues with water companies and the Environment Agency. The network continues to go from strength-to-strength, with our recent launch into estuaries and upcoming expansion into still waters. Thank you to all of you who have built this incredible community which continues to contribute to citizen scientists' battle for cleaner fresh waters. Want to help support the work we do to fight pollution? Find out more here: anglingtrust.net/get-involved/a… Our #AnglersAgainstPollution campaign is kindly supported by @anglingdirect @OrvisUK and @sportfishuk

⚠️ New data published today shows sewage spills continuing at an unacceptable rate ⚠️ "These pollution figures are, once again, highly disappointing. Both the water industry and environmental regulators are making ‘snail-paced’ progress in addressing this long-standing national scandal. It is evident that England’s wastewater infrastructure is not fit for purpose, and with water bills and investment rising steeply over the next five years, the public has a right to see a significant decrease in the volume of untreated sewage entering rivers and seas. Whilst it is encouraging to hear that the Environment Agency plans to increase the number of annual inspections from the current pitifully low figure of 800 to over 11,000 in the next two years, this effort will be largely pointless unless action is taken against polluting water companies operating in breach of their permits. Just 35 of last year’s 800 investigations are set to be taken forward to the next stage—hardly the tough legal deterrent that is needed, and has been promised by the government." Anglers are rolling up their sleeves to clear litter from Britain’s waterways during the #GreatBritishSpringClean, which runs until 6th April. On the first day of the Great British Spring Clean, our local Fisheries Support Officer, Andrew went along to support the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership and the local angling community on a litter ick on the River Medway in Tonbridge. Dorking & District Angling Society also kicked off the Great British Spring Clean/Anglers Against Litter Week. As usual, all litter collected was non-angling related. Over 20 rubble sacks of litter were removed from the River Mole and surrounding areas near Brockham, Surrey. Huge thanks to ReAP UK for collecting 25KG of the recovered plastics from the event. From Monday 31st March to Sunday 6th April, we are running our Anglers Against Litter Week sponsored by @Shimano_Fishing & supported The Insurance Emporium to highlight the fantastic work that anglers, clubs and fisheries are doing. Find out how you can get involved here: anglingtrust.net/2025/03/21/ang… #AnglersAgaintLitter #KeepBritainTidy #Shimano #InsuranceEmporium

You are looking at the litmus paper test for a river’s ability to support life. This is a beatis nymph and it dwells mainly in clean, flowing water. Pollution is insidious because the real damage it does can’t easily be observed. Aquatic creatures support the fish life in the river - without them, the fish will starve. Mayfly nymphs are extremely sensitive to changes in water and environmental conditions. Their decline points to a much bigger problem coming down the line. If we are looking for a template for a waterways we must make them clean, not chemically clean like a swimming pool, but naturally clean and packed with organisms.

FISHING IS STILL AN ADVENTURE AFTER 60 YEARS! I still get excited before a fishing trip and I was positively buzzing when last week I joined the Duke at his boat for a spot of bream and tench fishing. Eating and sleeping on the boat and fishing off the jetty - it’s dream stuff! A snatched hour on the first evening resulted in a fine bream of six pounds plus for the Duke and a very fine sausage sandwich. Can life get any better? More to follow… #Fishing #coarsefishing #tench #bream #dynamitebaits #camping #boats
