David Oday Smith, 39, a previously convicted felon residing in the District of Columbia, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a loaded handgun. On July 14, 2025, Metropolitan Police Department Crime Suppression Team officers observed Smith near a bus stop carrying a bag that appeared to be weighed down by an object. When officers approached, Smith fled on foot, throwing the bag over a fence behind a nearby business. Officers recovered the bag and found a black Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol loaded with one round in the chamber and 14 rounds in the magazine. Four members of the Southeast D.C. “Get Back Gang” (aka “the Z”) were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a violent conspiracy that resulted in two murders and a non-fatal drive-by shooting injuring multiple victims. The shooting at ODU is a tragic event for our community. We mourn the loss of life while we acknowledge the students who showed extreme bravery and courage by stopping the shooter and preventing further loss of life. The FBI is going to dig in and track down every single lead as we work alongside our partners to find answers. At this time, there are a total of 3 victims. 1 is deceased. The gunman is also deceased.
