Last semester I explained to my students about the “adjunctification” of academic labor and they were shocked. The average student (and their parents) have no idea about how labor works in academia. They assume that their instructors are well paid. And why wouldn’t they?

Something strange has happened over the last 10 years When I was a kid, every tech publication (Wired, TechCrunch, Engadget) truly loved and celebrated technology Over the last 10 years they all collectively decided they absolutely LOATHE technology. Every article is a hit piece. Every entrepreneur and creative thinker is being destroyed. The greatest inventors of our lives are being villainized. A lot of people are saying it’s because we live in a clickbait culture and hate is what drive clicks, but I don’t buy it If hate drove clicks all of these publications would be thriving. Instead, they’re all failing, going bankrupt, laying people off and on top of that I literally can’t name a single person who reads any of them There is a such a massive opportunity right now for anyone who’s willing to start a tech publication that actually celebrates and loves technology. I’m DYING for a version of Wired that actually covers real tech with an optimistic lens, and I know many other are too. Might have to f around and do this myself.

If you want to understand why the State Department is going after the ICC now, I think you need look no further than the fact that they arrested former President Duterte of the Phillipines because of actions he took in taking out drug dealers and fighting them. America has done similar, taking out drug boats in the western hemisphere, which many declared was in violation of international law and the rules of war. America is not a participant in the ICC and never has been, but one of the ICC statutes that they use as a loophole is that they claim jurisdiction if it happened in the territory of a member state of the ICC. About a decade ago, they used this to investigate American service members in Afghanistan for alleged warcrimes. They would do the same with Latin America, as basically everyone south of the border is a part of the ICC. I for one think blowing up cartels is pretty awesome, but I would rather not have soldiers doing so get tried in the Hague which is ridiculous. So yeah, this is a huge win towards dismantling and destroying post war global infrastructure that seeks to undermine national interests.

This wrecks the entire point of doing this. You're not reversing the error (of admitting large numbers of unskilled workers, and non-workers, who will be a long-term drain on the economy/finances), you're entrenching it.

My bike was stolen out of my garage in Seattle a couple years ago so I went down to the nearest RV encampment, found it and took it back. Very eye opening to discuss this experience with a progressive friend of mine who said “I am ok with people like you’s bikes being stolen because we cannot provide affordable housing”

Republicans got outvoted in TX and GA during primaries. The fact that they’re going to seriously outvote Dems in AZ in a year the Dems should do well chasing two GOP House seats speaks volumes.
