Took my 2-year-old to the liquor store over the weekend to show him one of dad’s little “work experiments” What began as a crazy little idea of turning highly purified laundry and shower water into beer has now turned into two of the fastest-growing craft beer releases in the country — Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch. Both are part of a first-of-their-kind collaboration between @EpicCleantec and @DevilsCanyon with the simple goal of helping people to rethink their relationship with water. Now in 80+ stores, including BevMo, Total Wine, and many more!

"Developer Kobayashi Group, LLC is set to deliver Hawai‘i’s first on-site residential greywater reuse system at Kuilei Place, working with Epic Cleantec — a California-based company specializing in on-site water reuse technology." One of the things I admire most about our team at Epic is that we tend to run toward complexity, not away from it. In this case, that meant years of detailed permitting work, technical education, and close coordination across agencies to ensure the system meets Hawai‘i’s standards for safety, reliability, and public trust. As Alana Kobayashi Pakkala shared in Building Industry Hawai‘i: "𝘌𝘱𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘤’𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩... 𝘌𝘱𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘤 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴." The approval process took multiple years and required coordination with the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, the City’s Department of Environmental Services, and the Hawai‘i Department of Health. That legwork isn’t flashy, but it’s what it takes to responsibly open new markets. Our hope is that this project can serve as a blueprint for future developments across Hawai‘i, helping make water reuse easier, faster, and more familiar for developers, regulators, and communities alike. The result: a project projected to conserve over 11 million gallons of water annually, and a path forward for what’s possible when the work is done together.

🏈💧🍺 Recycled water just earned a spot at the #SuperBowlLX This Super Bowl, tens of thousands of fans will be drinking our recycled water brews during the week’s biggest music events, hosted at San Francisco’s iconic Pier 80. The festivities will showcase our Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch, brewed by @DevilsCanyon Brewing Company and served in partnership with @Non Plus Ultra. The shows will span across three days and feature some of the world’s most popular artists, including @CalvinHarris, @Diplo, @TPain, @DuttyPaul, and @Illenium. We won’t make water reuse mainstream by explaining it. We make it mainstream by putting it into everyday experiences — until it just feels normal. 🛒 And good news, this isn't limited to one weekend! Our beers are now available at major California retailers, including BevMo! and Total Wine & More, and for online purchase in 13 states.

What’s unfolding in Iran may be the most consequential and underreported story in the world. Free elections there won’t just be a human rights victory. The fall of the Ayatollahs will release tens of millions of people, who come from one of the most creative civilizations in history. Iranian culture has shaped art, science and innovation for centuries. Suppressing it hurts not just Iranians, but humanity as a whole.

Would you try this recycled shower water beer? San Francisco-based Epic Cleantec, partnering with Devil's Canyon Brewing Company, has launched The Shower Hour IPA, a 6% ABV craft beer made with highly purified recycled water collected from showers and laundry machines in residential buildings. The IPA emphasizes sustainability beyond just its water source, incorporating drought-resistant Azacca hops with reduced irrigation needs, Fonio grain which is naturally drought-tolerant and grows without fertilizers while supporting soil health, and Kveik yeast that ferments at warm temperatures to reduce energy consumption. Epic CEO Aaron Tartakovsky explained that the beer serves a psychological purpose, helping people become comfortable with recycled water by demonstrating that when purified water is put into an appealing product, acceptance increases dramatically. It takes about ten gallons of water to make one gallon of beer. #sustainability #tech #water

Aaron Tartakovsky, Co-Founder and CEO of @EpicCleantec, is celebrated as a Hydro20 honoree for leading the onsite water reuse revolution, transforming urban resilience by scaling systems that significantly reduce water demand. Challenging outdated centralized water systems, @ATartakovsky promotes decentralized recycling at the building scale, capable of reusing up to 95% of wastewater. His vision expands beyond basic applications like toilet flushing to include irrigation, cooling towers, and even laundry, drastically reducing reliance on municipal water supplies. Under Tartakovsky’s leadership, Epic Cleantec now operates landmark projects, such as the 1550 Building in San Francisco, which recycles 7,500 gallons of graywater daily, totaling 2.5 million gallons annually, sparing a key California reservoir. Other notable projects include Salesforce Tower, home to the largest blackwater recycling system in the U.S., and the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, demonstrating that urban water reuse is both practical and scalable, even in high-end properties. Beyond technology, Tartakovsky advances public understanding of water reuse through initiatives like Epic’s OneWater Brew, a beer made from recycled graywater that sparked widespread conversation. By educating developers, architects, engineers, and contractors, Tartakovsky fosters a collaborative learning environment, enabling the construction industry to adopt innovative water reuse practices more readily. Aaron Tartakovsky’s visionary leadership in water recycling and urban sustainability has earned him a well-deserved place among the Hydro20 honorees. Hydro20 is an initiative of waterloop in collaboration with @scienswater and is sponsored by Antea Group, Environmental Defense Fund, and Human Capital Solutions.
