Many people have been leaving ‘X’ over the last week and continue to do so.. I will be staying on the platform, as it is an excellent place to share the stories of those we need to remember!

Joy Lofthouse, enlisted in the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1943, flew Spitfires and bombers, becoming one of the 168 female pilots, dubbed "Attagirls," who delivered aircraft during WWII. She contributed significantly to the war effort by ensuring planes reached their destinations for combat and training purposes. She was also one of the very first female pilots to fly a Spitfire during WWII. Joy Lofthouse, 1923 - 2017. 🌹

By 1942, as the situation for Jews in France deteriorated, Sister Denise Bergon began her clandestine operation to shelter Jewish children. Her convent, nestled in the French countryside, became a sanctuary not just for contemplation and prayer, but for saving the lives of 83 Jewish children over the course of the Second World War. The convent's isolation helped in keeping their activities under wraps, but the danger was ever-present. There were close calls, times when German patrols came too close for comfort, or when suspicions were raised by local informants. The children attended lessons, played, and participated in religious services, all while learning to conceal their true identities. Through a combination of luck, divine providence as some might say, and Sister Bergon's meticulous planning, the children remained hidden.

My eyes were struck again by another beautiful painting in the RAF Club in Piccadilly, London: Mary Wilkins Ellis - Master Air Pilot and 1st Officer Air Transport Auxiliary. Between 1 October 1941 and 31 December 1945, Mary piloted 400 spitfires to 210 military airfields, flew 76 different types of aircraft and delivered 1000 military aircraft to RAF Squadrons throughout World War II. Proudly hanging on the wall, this painting was presented on Mary’s 100 birthday by members of Vectis Flying Corps & Royal Naval Air Service Association.

I was struck by the sight of this beautiful painting of Noor Inayat Khan in the RAF Club in Piccadilly, London. Unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen in 2023.
